NIAGARA, N.Y. - The Princeton men's hockey team fell three goals behind Niagara early in the third period and couldn't rally, losing its season opener 4-2 at Dwyer Arena Friday night.
Niagara, which entered the game with four consecutive wins and a 4-2 record, scored 23 seconds into the third period to take a 3-0 lead when Nick Kormanyos beat Tiger goalie Dave Stathos (Longueuil, Que.) while Niagara was on the power play.
George Parros (Randolph, N.J.) finally got Princeton on the board at the 5-minute mark when he stuffed in a pass from Brad Parsons (Kingston, Mass.). Dan Hursh (Calgary, Alberta) also assisted on the goal, Hursh's only other career point was in last season's opening weekend against Niagara at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton pulled to within one goal when captain David Schneider (Melrose Park, Ill.) scored a power-play goal at 10:52 to make it 3-2. Parsons and Parros picked up the assists. But after pulling Stathos in favor of an extra attacker, Kormanyos added an empty-net goal, giving Niagara the 4-2 victory.
"Halfway through the second period we started to find some rhythm," Princeton coach Len Quesnelle said. "We fought back, but it just wasn't enough."
Stathos finished with 31 saves, including 12 in the first period. Niagara, which improved to 5-2, and Princeton will play Saturday at 7 p.m.
Princeton threw 14 shots at Niagara goalie Rob Bonk in the second period, but couldn't crack the scoring column. Bonk ended with 28 saves.
Parson's injured his knee during the game and will miss the second Niagara game. Sophomore defenseman Matt Maglione (Fayetteville, N.Y.) missed the game with an injured foot and listed as week-to-week.
Next weekend Princeton will open ECAC action at Clarkson on Nov. 9 and St. Lawrence on Nov. 10. The Tigers' first home weekend at Hobey Baker Rink is Saturday, Nov. 17 vs. Vermont and Sunday, Nov. 18 against Dartmouth. The Vermont game begins at 7 p.m., while the Dartmouth game starts at 3 p.m. Following the Dartmouth contest fans can skate with the Princeton players in the annual Skate with the Tigers event.
