PRINCETON, N.J. - When it comes to overtime, Princeton's Matt Maglione (Fayetteville, N.Y.) shines. The sophomore defenseman whipped a wrist shot past Yale goalie Dan Lombard at 3:02 overtime to give the Tigers a 2-1 victory Tuesday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
Maglione collected a crisp pass from Josh Roberts (Orleans, Mass.) on the left wing and beat Lombard to the stick side on the Tigers' only shot in overtime. Maglione also scored Princeton's last overtime goal in a victory against Vermont last year.
"Josh made a great pass," said Maglione, who missed the first four games with an injury. "The coaches have been working on my defensive play and told me that the offense would come." The victory continued Princeton's recent dominance over Yale, as the Tigers have lost only once to the Bulldogs in the last 12 meetings, posting a 9-1-2 mark. The ECAC travel partners will face off again Saturday in New Haven, Conn.
Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, Princeton's Trevor Beaney (Cornwall, Vt.) scored his second career goal and second in three games as he banged in his own rebound to tie the game 1-1 at 12:26. Beaney, a defenseman his first two years at Princeton, was moved to right wing this season to add size up front. After Lombard stopped Beaney's initial shot, the junior managed to get his stick on the rebound to even the score. Maglione and David Del Monte (Mississauga, Ont.) picked up the assists.
"We knew that after Sunday's performance [a 5-2 loss to Dartmouth] we had to come back strong and compete," coach Len Quesnelle said. "That's the type of effort that we have to see on a consistent basis if we're going to be successful."
Princeton, which hadn't held an opponent to less than 30 shots in the first six games, limited Yale to 22. Goalie Dave Stathos (Longueuil, Que.) was equal to 21 of them, including a stop on Luke Earl in the first minute of overtime.
Ryan Steeves put Yale ahead 1-0 when he was left alone to the left of Stathos in the first period. Stathos stopped Evan Wax's shot from in front but lost track of the rebound, and an unchecked Steeves casually backhanded a shot into an open net at 8:37.
Yale had solid opportunities in the first period as Stathos made a pair saves on Wax from the left face-off circle less than three minutes into the game. Michael Grobe almost gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead when his snap shot from the left circle hit the crossbar with 8 1/2 minutes to play in the first.
Princeton, which had a sluggish first 10 minutes, had its best chance when Maglione's wrist shot from between the circles was gloved by Lombard. After a Yale penalty expired, Del Monte had two changes, one off a rebound of David Schneider's (Melrose Park, Ill.) shot from the point that deflected wide and another on a wrap around that Lombard stopped.
Princeton started to find its rhythm and late in the first period Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer (Manlius, N.Y.) tipped the puck away from a Yale defenseman and sent Chris Owen (Westwood, Mass.) in on a partial breakaway, but Lombard was equal to the task. Fouladgar-Mercer had two swipes at a bouncing puck on the rebound but couldn't connect.
The Tigers maintained pressure in the second period, firing 13 shots at Lombard. Del Monte began the period with a blast from the left wing just two minutes into the period, but Lombard preserved the Bulldogs' one-goal lead.
After negating two power-play opportunities by taking penalties less than 20 second into the man advantage, Princeton's Dan Hursh (Calgary, Alberta) slid a wrist shot along the ice just wide midway through the second period. Roberts nearly chipped a backhander past Lombard when he skated in from the left-wing board with the Tigers shorthanded.
In the last 2:15 of the second period the Tigers had two quality chances. With Lombard out of the net, George Parros (Randolph, N.J.) and Maglione each had whacks at a loose puck in front the net, and with a minute to play Neil Stevenson-Moore (North Vancouver, B.C.) fed James Fitzpatrick (Lawrenceville, N.J.), who raced past the defense but couldn't solve Lombard.
The third period saw the Tigers continue to carry the play, firing 12 shots on goal while holding Yale to just six shots. With the game tied 1-1, Quesnelle showed confidence in his freshmen, sending out Stevenson-Moore, Fitzpatrick and Mike Patton (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) in the last minute of regulation.
Maglione's goal improved Princeton's record to 2-5 and 2-3 in the ECAC. The loss dropped Yale to 1-4-1 and 1-3-1 in the conference.
After Saturday's game at Yale, Princeton will play three consecutive home games - Nov. 27 vs. Northeastern, Nov. 30 vs. Colgate and Dec. 1 vs. Cornell. All three games begin at 7 p.m.
