PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton men's hockey team, preparing for a Dec. 28 and 29 weekend series against Notre Dame, will be without captain David Schneider (Melrose Park, Ill.) and No. 2 goalie Nate Nomeland (Fargo, N.D.) for four to six weeks.
Schneider fractured a bone in his left foot while blocking a shot at Union on Dec. 7. The senior defenseman finished the game and played the following night in Princeton's 4-2 win at Rensselaer, registering an assist on David Del Monte's (Mississauga, Ont.) first goal of the game.
The anchor to a defensive unit that regularly uses two freshmen, two sophomores and a junior, Schneider is third on the team in scoring with six points (2 goals, 4 assists) and is a key ingredient on special teams. He has 16 career goals, which ties him for second most (Steve Shirreffs, 1995-99) in Princeton history among defensemen. A reliable back-up to goalie Dave Stathos (Longueuil, Que.) the last two years, Nomeland fracture his catching hand (left) in practice. The junior has played in four games this year with a 3.16 goals-against average. Last season Nomeland stopped 60 shots in a 5-4 loss to North Dakota at Wisconsin's Badger Showdown, the second highest single-game total in Princeton history. He also turned aside 40 Dartmouth shots while recording a shutout in Princeton's 4-0 victory in Hanover, N.H. Nomeland has a 3.34 career goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.
Nomeland's injury elevates freshman Trevor Clay (Winnipeg, Manitoba) to the No. 2 goalie position. Clay has played in one game this year, stopping 12 of 15 shots in the third period of a 7-1 loss at Niagara the first weekend of the season. As a member of the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League, Clay was named the league's top goalie in 1998 and 1999. During the 1999 season he posted a 2.08 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage.
Princeton will play Notre Dame Friday, Dec. 28 at Hobey Baker Rink and Saturday, Dec. 29 at Trenton's Sovereign Bank Arena, home of the ECHL's Trenton Titans. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the game at Princeton can be purchased by calling 609-258-3538. Tickets for the game at Sovereign Bank Arena can be purchased at the arena or by calling Ticketmaster at 609-520-3700.
