TROY, N.Y. - The Princeton men's hockey team went into Saturday's contest with Rensselaer needing a win, and accomplished just that. Trevor Beaney (Jr., Cornwall, Vt.) scored the go-ahead goal at 1:19 of the third period to give the Tigers a 4-2 win over Rensselaer in Eastern College Athletic Conference Action in front of 3,131 at Houston Fieldhouse in Troy, N.Y.
"It was a big win," said Princeton head coach Len Quesnelle. "It was a much better effort, especially after last night's performance. We needed to come out and have a much better effort in all areas of our game and I think that we did that tonight."
Princeton's offense took a while to warmup in the first period. Rensselaer held a 5-0 shot advantage by the time the Tigers put their first shot on net at 5:56 of the period but the Orange and Black out shot the Engineers 11-4 to close out the first with a 11-9 edge. It was just the 11th time in 37 periods this season that Princeton has been able to get more pucks on net then its opponents. That momentum carried over into the second period as the Tigers got on board at the 3:20 mark. Captain David Schneider (Sr., Melrose Park, Ill.) had the puck deep in the defensive zone and passed it up to George Parros (Jr., Randolph, N.J.) on the right wing. Parros slipped a pass through the Rensselaer defense to David Del Monte (Jr., Missisagua, Ont.) who was able to get the puck up and past Rensselaer netminder Nathan Marsters (So. Grimsby, Ont.) to give Princeton a 1-0 lead. It was the fifth time this season that the Tigers have struck first, but only the second time that they have been able to hold on for the win
The Orange and Black extended its lead at 10:04 of the second period when Luc Paquin (Fr., Le Gardeur, Que.) scored the first goal of his collegiate career off of an assist from Brad Parsons (Sr., Kingston, Mass.). Paquin brought the puck up the ice from the defensive zone while the teams were skating in a 4-on-4 situation and his shot went off the crossbar and into the back of the net for a 2-0 Princeton lead.
Rensselaer came out firing after calling timeout, as Jim Vickers (Sr., Aurora, Ill.) scored his first goal of the season at 10:04. Ryan Shields (So., Portage LaPrarie, Man.) had the puck behind the Princeton net and fed Vickers who parked the puck in the upper right corner of the net.
Tiger netminder David Stathos (Sr., Longueuil, Que.) stopped two-point blank shots by Danny Eberly (Jr., Canton, Mass.) and Marc Cavosie (Jr., Cohoes, N.Y.) with less then a minute to go in the period to preserve the 2-1 lead but a scuffle resulted in Rensselaer power play and the Engineers did not waste the opportunity. Jim Henkel (Sr., Hazlet, N.J.) scored with 22 seconds remaining in the second period off of assists from Carson Butterwick (Jr., Prince Albert, Sask.) and Vickers to tie the game going into the final period.
The game would not remain tied for long. Beaney scored the eventual game-winner just 1:19 into the final period with assists from Jesse Mazer (Fr., High River, Alb.) and Chris Owen (So., Westwood, Mass.). The Tigers would add a power play goal at 7:35 to provide the final 4-2 margin. Parros took a pass from Parsons and sent it across the crease to Del Monte. Del Monte then snuck it past Marsters for the insurance goal as the Orange and Black held on for the 4-2 win.
This was just the second time this season the Princeton has scored more then two goals. It was also just the second time in the last nine meetings that Princeton has come away with a win at Houston Fieldhouse.
The Tigers will be out of action until Dec. 28-29 when they host a two-game series against Notre Dame.
