Princeton, N.J. - Princeton won its regular-season home finale at Baker Rink by defeating Vermont 2-1 in overtime on Saturday evening. Junior goalie Dave Stathos and freshman defenseman Matt Maglione each played important in helping Princeton's class of 2001 win its final regular-season tilt on home ice by making incredible plays at key moments in the game. While Stathos, who is 2-0-1 in his last three decisions, only made 23 saves in the contest, he made incredible save after incredible save. Maglione scored the game-winning goal off of a pass from senior Chris Corrinet at 2:54 in overtime.
The game started slowly as both teams played cautiously early, which is not surprising considering that the Tigers and Catamounts entered tonight's game ranked eighth and ninth in the ECAC respectively. Only ten teams make the postseason tournament, which makes every point crucial down the stretch.
Vermont scored the game's first goal at 19:22 of the second period by taking advantage of a Princeton defensive-zone turnover. One of Princeton's defenseman made a lazy cross-ice pass in his own end, which Vermont's Graham Mink stole, and then deposited in the back of the Tigers' net. Mink, who scored two goals in the Catamount's 3-2 win in Burlington over Princeton on Nov. 17, looked to be playing a familiar role in tonight's contest. In fact, Mink's goal at 17:28 of the third period was the game-winner in that earlier contest. Moreover, Mink has scored half of his goals against the Tigers this season.
Princeton came out of the dressing room as a team on a mission in the third period, for this team wanted to win the final home game for the seniors. The men of Old Nassau tied the game at 1:50 of the third period when freshman Chris Owen threaded a beautiful pass to Corrinet, who beat Vermont's Andrew Allen. The goal was Corrinet's 13th of the season, and is even more special for the senior assistant captain, who played in his last regular-season game at Baker Rink on Saturday night.
The third period ended tied 1-1, and entered an overtime period, which no one at Baker Rink will ever forget. The overtime period featured lots of end-to-end action, but the crescendo came when Maglione scored his second goal of the weekend at 2:54 in overtime. To describe in words the scene at Baker Rink could not either capture the emotion of the moment or the buzz in the rink, as this was a tremendously magical happening.
Princeton rejoiced in its accomplishments this evening, and will take an enormous amount of positive energy and confidence with it on the road next weekend.
"Stathos played a whale of game tonight, " said coach Len Quesnelle, "and I feel great for our seniors, who won their final home regular-season game."
This was the first overtime win for the Tigers this season, who remain in eighth place in the ECAC standings after tonight's game. Princeton plays at Brown and Harvard next weekend.
