coaches: Princeton: Len Quesnelle (1st season) 9-14-4 overall, 8-9-3 ECAC, 3-4-1 Ivy vs. Brown: 0-1-0 Brown: Roger Grillo (4th season) 32-71-14 overall, 32-71-14 at Brown vs. Princeton: 4-5-1
first meeting: Brown extended Princeton's season-long seven-game losing streak to eight by winning 5-3 at Baker Rink (Jan. 13, 2001). David Schneider, Chris Corrinet and Shane Campbell each scored goals for Princeton.
tomorrow night: at Harvard - March 2 - 7 p.m. Bright Hockey Center (Cambridge, Mass.)
Maglione the magnificent - Freshman defenseman Matt Maglione scored two of Princeton's three goals against Dartmouth and Vermont last weekend, including the overtime game-winner vs. the Catamounts. Maglione was named the ECAC/CCM Rookie of the Week for his play, and earned the first star of the game in the 2-1 overtime win vs. Vermont. In addition, he comes into this weekend as the team leader in plus-minus ratings with a +15. The next best Princeton player in plus-minus ratings is David Schneider, who has +10 rating. Seniors win last home game - Shane Campbell (Red Deer, Alberta), Chris Corrinet (Greenfield, Mass.), Jason Dillow (LeRoy, N.Y.), Ethan Doyle (Marblehead, Mass), Kirk Lamb (Cold Lake, Alberta) and Peter Zavodny (Toronto, Ont.) each have a positive memory of playing in Baker Rink for the last time, as Princeton won a 2-1 overtime thriller against Vermont on Saturday Feb. 24. In fact, Corrinet scored one goal and tallied an assist in his Baker Rink finale.
Unblemished in overtime - Princeton is 1-0-4 in overtime this season, their first win coming in the 2-1 victory vs. Vermont on Saturday Feb. 24.
Chris is clicking - Chris Corrinet has scored in five of his last six games. During that stretch he has scored three goals and has four assists.
Doing well in the second season - Princeton had two team goals for the last ten games, which were to keep its goals-against average below 3.00 goals per game and to outshoot its opponents. The Tigers have given up just 2.875 goal per game in last eight games, but have given up 250 shots while taking 221 shots on goal in the last eight games. In the last four games Princeton is giving up an average of 1.25 goals per game (5 goals), and opponents are outshooting the Tigers by only 5 shots (111 shots for vs. 116 shots against).
Stathos the save master - Junior goalie Dave Stathos has stopped 111 of the 116 shots he has faced in the last four games, which gives an astounding .957 save percentage in those outings.
Playoff mathematics - The top ten teams make the ECAC playoffs, and the Tigers come into the weekend in eighth place in the league. The top five teams host the first round of the ECAC playoffs at their respective campus sites, and then the five winners advance to Lake Placid, N.Y. The tiebreakers for the playoff seedings are as follows, the first tie breaker will be head-to-head record, the second tiebreaker will be the team's record against the top five teams in the conference and the third tiebreaker will be the team's record against the ECAC top 10. The final three tiebreakers in order are goal differential in head-to-head meetings, goal differential in games against the top five teams and goal differential against the top 10 teams. Princeton clinches eighth place with three points.
Playoff mathematics2 - The best-case scenario for Princeton would be a third place finish, but there are a number of things that have to happen. First, the Tigers need to sweep their weekend series at Brown and Harvard. Further, Cornell has to lose twice (vs. Rensselaer and vs. Union), Colgate has to beat Rensselaer, Yale has to beat Harvard and lose at Brown and Dartmouth must only get one point in its two games with Clarkson and St. Lawrence. If all of these things happen, then there would be a four-way tie for third place between Princeton, Dartmouth, Cornell and Harvard. Princeton, who would have a 3-2-1 record if it beat Harvard this weekend.
Playoff mathematics3 - The worst-case scenario for Princeton would be an 11th place finish, which would mean the Tigers would miss the playoffs. Princeton has to lose both games this weekend, Colgate has to sweep Rensselaer and Union, Union has to beat Cornell, Yale must get two more points than Dartmouth, and Vermont needs to get exactly three points. This would set up a three-way tie among Colgate, Vermont and Princeton, with the tiebreakers putting the Tigers 11th.
Baker Rink draws rave reviews from USA Today - Every week USA Today does a story on a famous sports building, and Baker Rink was featured in this week's "Our House: A weekly look at the home team edge" column by Andy Gardiner in the Wednesday Feb. 28 issue. Yale coach Tim Taylor has a special place in his heart for Baker Rink saying, "I played in the late 1950s and have coached well into the new millenium, and it's always meaningful for me to walk into that building."
