PRINCETON, N.J. - The Tigers, coming off a commanding win over Rutgers earlier this week, fell to the Greyhounds of Loyola 13-9. In a day where the sun struggled to break through the clouds, Princeton failed to topple a tough Loyola team, ranked 6th in the nation entering this game. The Tigers, who before this match were ranked No. 2, now stand at 1-1 for the season
Princeton went up, 1-0, in the first few minutes of the game, but never regained the lead. Loyola, led by the early scoring effort of junior attack, Stacey Morlang opened up a 4-1 lead and the Greyhounds never looked back. Morlang, who scored the first four goals against the Tigers, finished the game with five goals and one assist.
Princeton was unable to develop any real offensive threat and spent most of the day trying to catch up to a Loyola team that was able to control most of the play. Princeton out-shot Loyola 23 to 19 yet freshman Tiger goalie, Meghan McInnes only made 3 saves. Loyola was able to capitalize on errors committed by the Tigers, maintain possession in their offensive area and fire off well placed shots. Princeton's captain, Julie Shaner, who posted only one goal in the 16-3 Tiger victory over Rutgers, lead the Tigers offense today with 2 goals and 3 assists. Kim Smith and Lauren Simone also posted two goals a piece. "In the second half, they [Loyola] did a good job of controlling the tempo," said Smith. "They got it on attack, spread it out and wasted a lot of time off the clock. We got a little nervous and forced a lot of play."
Princeton defense, lead by senior captain, Dayna Federici, tightened up in the second half, allowing five goals to slip by the goalie. Princeton, towards the end of the game had a couple great offensive chances that started with tough defense. Alex Fiore, from Princeton had picked up several key ground-balls that lead to the final two goals that Princeton registered.
Dayna Federici summed up the game. "Loyola coming up with the draws and them controlling the ball in their offensive area was the key to their success. It was almost like they were stalling and once we made a little error, the little mistakes in transition, they were able to capitalize on a lot of them."
The Tigers will travel to Virginia, March 18 and Duke, March 21, for their next two contests and will return to 1952 stadium to face Penn State on March 24 at 1 p.m.
