Princeton, N.J. - Princeton, who came into Saturday's contest with No. 14-ranked Penn State with two stellar wins at No. 9-ranked Virginia and at No. 5-ranked Duke, needed two goals from Junior Kim Smith in the last 1:30 to defeat the Nittany Lions 10-9. Smith scored four goals, and Charlotte Kenworthy added three markers.
Two goals by Smith and one goal by Kenworthy gave the Tigers an early 3-0 lead, but Penn State scored the next three goals to even the score at three. Colleen O'Hara scored two of these goals for the Nittany Lions. Princeton outscored Penn State 4-1 in the last eight minutes of the half to take an 8-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Lightning struck for Penn State, as it scored the next five goals in the game to take a one-goal lead with just 1:30 left in regulation. O'Hara, who scored three goals in the game, was credited with the ninth goal of the contest. Princeton standout Julie Shaner, who did not play at all in the second half, left midway through the first half with an injury. Princeton won the next draw control, and Smith ripped cord at 1:24 to tie the score. After another win on the draw control, Smith scored with just 15.6 seconds left in regulation to give Princeton a 10-9 lead.
The game should have been over then, however, a turnover and foul by Princeton in its own end almost came back to haunt the Tigers. A Penn State player beat freshman goalie Meghan McInnes less than a second after time expired, and the goal was disallowed.
"Penn State outplayed us in every facet of the game, " said Coach Chris Sailer after the game, and we were never in the game mentally."
"We will take the win, but our team should expect everyone that plays us to come at us hard, " added Sailer.
The Tigers host Columbia on Tuesday, March 27 at the Class of 1952 Stadium at 7 p.m. This will be Princeton's first game against an Ivy League opponent.
