No. 2-Ranked Women's Lacrosse Team Trounces Rutgers 16-3

Princeton, N.J. - Princeton defeated Rutgers 16-3 in its season-opener on Wednesday afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. While it took the Tigers more than 10 minutes to score the first goal of the game, Princeton went into halftime with a commanding 12-0 lead. Junior Charlotte Kenworthy scored four goals, and junior tri-captain Lauren Simone added two goals and three assists to fuel the 16-3 victory.
Simone started the scoring barrage at 10:21 of the first half, as she found fellow captain Julie Shaner, who beat Rutgers goalie Lauren Gullata. Goals by Whitney Miller, Simone and Kenworthy were scored in rapid succession to give Princeton a 4-0 lead.
On what will be the first of many connections between freshmen Mary Beth Hogan and Theresa Sherry, Hogan assisted on Sherry's first collegiate goal at 12:09. Sherry, who sang the National Anthem prior to the face-off, scored another goal less than a minute later. The Tigers entered the locker room up 12-0 at halftime, but surrendered three goals in the second half to the Scarlet Knights.
"We played well in the first half, but we fell asleep in the second half, " said head coach Chris Sailer after Wednesday's 16-3 win.
Freshman goalie Meghan McInnes made six saves in her collegiate debut, and junior Jess Nelson scored her first collegiate goal in the victory.
The Tigers host No. 7-ranked Loyola at Class of 1952 Stadium at 1 p.m. on Sunday Mar. 11.
