Princeton, N.J. - Princeton defeated Cornell 14-4 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Theresa Sherry scored three goals, and Julie Shaner added three assists for Princeton. The Tigers will play at Dartmouth on Sunday, as the Big Green defeated Penn State 9-7 in other NCAA first-round action on Thursday. Lauren Simone had three points (2g, 1a), Charlotte Kenworthy and Alex Fiore each scored two goals and freshman Katie Coyne scored her first collegiate goal.
Cornell jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Ginny Miles scored at 24:24 of the first half, but the Big Red would not go away victorious in their first-ever NCAA appearance, as Princeton scored the next nine goals to take a comfortable lead. The turning point in the first stanza came when Sherry stole a pass from a Cornell defender and went the length of the field to give Princeton a 2-1 lead at 19:38 of the first half. Princeton led 9-2 at the half, and went on to win the contest by the score of 14-4. The highlight of the game came early in the second half, as Theresa Sherry found herself in the slot. Unfortunately, two Cornell players were positioned well right behind her, which made a conventional shot out of the question. The freshman midfielder did not flinch, however, as she beat the Cornell goalie with a no-look, backwards shot.
"We played a good game today. Our transition offense and defense were both great, " said Princeton coach Chris Sailer after the 14-4 win.
"We all talked about coming out and playing well today. It was the last thing that we discussed before we left the locker room " said Simone.
Princeton will play at Dartmouth's Scully-Fahey Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 13.
