Women's Lacrosse Whips Dartmouth 10-4 in NCAA Quarterfinals

Hanover, N.H. - Princeton came to Dartmouth a team on a mission to reach the final four, and the Tigers can pack their bags for Baltimore, Md. after defeating the Big Green 10-4 in the NCAA quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. Lauren Simone scored five points (3g, 2a), Theresa Sherry had her second consecutive game with a hat trick and Julie Shaner added two goals in Princeton's victory. While Dartmouth handed Princeton its only conference loss of the season (13-5 on April 21), the Tigers increased their all-time NCAA record against the Big Green to 4-0. This will be Princeton's eighth trip to the final four, and they will play against Maryland in the national semifinals.
Princeton opened the first half with goals by Sherry, Alex Fiore and Julie Shaner to jump out to an early 3-0 lead. The Tigers outshot the Big Green 12-2 in the first half, while freshman goalie Meghan McInnes made two key saves from point-blank range. Sherry scored two more goals and Simone added her first goal of the game to send the Tigers into half-time up 6-0. The last time that Dartmouth was held scoreless was in an NCAA quarterfinal game against Loyola in 1998 when it was behind 5-0. The Big Green went on the win that game 9-8, however, that would not be the case this time. While the Big Green scored the first three goals of the first half to cut Princeton's lead to 6-3, but Princeton would score the next four goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead. Simone scored twice and had one assist in the second stanza.
"We really played scared after we got down early in our loss to Dartmouth in April, and I think that we came in with a more balanced approach this time, " said coach Chris Sailer.
"Our team played a fabulous game today, and we were in a zone in the first half, " added Sailer.
Another key cog in Princeton's machine was Fiore, who scored one goal and won many groundballs in the contest.
The Tigers play against Maryland on Friday, May 18 at 6 p.m. at John's Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
