Today's Note of the Day
The rematch - Maryland defeated Princeton 7-6 on April 25 at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md. In that game Rachel Becker held Jen Adams to two goals, one being a free position shot. Adams scored the game-winner with just over one minute to play. Julie Shaner had two ground balls and caused five turnovers, Mimi Hammerberg and Theresa Sherry each had three ground balls, and Meghan McInnes made seven saves in defeat. Also, Kim Smith scored three goals in the game. Courtney Hobbs, Quinn Carney and Jen Adams each scored twice against Princeton on April 25. The Tigers turned the ball over 14 times, but Maryland only committed five turnovers in the game. The Terrapins outshot Princeton 19-9, grabbed three more ground balls, won three more draws and were 3/3 on free position shots in the contest. The Tigers caused 14 turnovers, while the Terrapins could only muster nine caused turnovers.

Recent history - Maryland defeated Princeton 16-8 in the 2000 NCAA championship behind 10 points (5g, 5a) from Jen Adams. A young Princeton team led 4-3 at the half, as Lauren Simone had a hat trick and Julie Shaner scored two goals.
Ancient history - While Maryland owns a 16-3 advantage all-time in its series with Princeton, the Terrapins only lead the Tigers 3-2 in NCAA tournament play. In fact, Princeton won its only national championship against Maryland in 1994, and the Tigers are the last team other than Maryland to win an NCAA title.
Coming home - Katie Coyne, Tara Hardiman, Theresa Sherry and Kim Smith all played their high school lacrosse at Bryn Mawr in Baltimore. Meghan McInnes, who is another Baltimore native, played at Roland Park.
Dartmouth demolition - Princeton defeated Dartmouth 10-4 in NCAA quarterfinal action on Sunday, May 13. In that game the Tigers held the Big Green scoreless in the first half (6-0), which was the first time that Dartmouth had not scored a goal by halftime since a 1998 NCAA quarterfinal game against Loyola. Further, Princeton outshot Dartmouth 12-2 in the first stanza, as it took the Big Green more than 23 minutes to take its first shot on goal. Finally, Princeton became the first Ivy League opponent to defeat Dartmouth at Scully-Fahey Field, which first hosted games in the 2000 season.
A tall order - Princeton is 0-3 this year against the teams in the Final Four.

Fearless freshman - Freshman Theresa Sherry scored three goals in the 10-4 NCAA quarterfinal win at Dartmouth on Sunday, May 13, which comes on the heels of recording a hat trick in her first NCAA tournament game in Princeton's 14-4 win over Cornell on Thursday, May 10.
Tournament turbulence - No. 1 seed Maryland survived a quarterfinal scare when it came back from a one-goal deficit with three goals in the last 1:35 to defeat James Madison 11-9 on May 13. With the game tied late in regulation Maryland's Quinn Carney charged at the left side of the goal, however, she lost the ball en route. A James Madison defender pounced on the ball, but scooped the ball past their own goalie with only 18 seconds remaining. The Terrapins added a late goal to win the game 11-9.
Consistent performer - Junior tri-captain Lauren Simone has scored a point in every game she has played in this season (18 games, 37g, 21a, 58 pts.). Simone scored three points (2g, 1a) in the 14-4 win vs. Cornell, and she had a five-point (3g, 2a) performance in Princeton's 10-4 NCAA quarterfinal win at Dartmouth.
Diverse attack - Nine players scored goals in Princeton's 14-4 win versus Cornell in the NCAA first round on Thursday, May 10. Furthermore, Princeton freshman Katie Coyne scored her first collegiate goal.
Ivy history - Princeton is the 15th Ivy League team to earn a spot in the Final Four. Two Ivy League teams have previously won NCAA championships in women's lacrosse (Harvard - 1990, Princeton - 1994).
Ivy honors - Nine Princeton players were selected to the All-Ivy team, which was released on Friday, May 11. Kim Smith, Lauren Simone, Julie Shaner and Rachel Becker all earned first-team All-Ivy honors. Moreover, Smith, Shaner and Becker were unanimous selections. Theresa Sherry and Jess Nelson each captured second- team All-Ivy accolades, and Charlotte Kenworthy, Whitney Miller and Brooke Owens received honorable mention All-Ivy honors.
"Maryland, My Maryland" - Whitney Miller (Bishopville) and Hannah Foster (Bethesda) are both from Maryland.
Close shaves - The two NCAA semifinal meetings between Princeton and Maryland were both decided by one goal, as the Tigers defeated the Terrapins 7-6 in 1993 and Maryland won 6-5 in 1996. Also, both teams enter Friday's contest enjoying a + 16 scoring margin over NCAA tournament opponents.
