Baltimore, Md. - Maryland defeated Princeton 14-7 in the National semifinals at John's Hopkins University on Friday evening. The Terrapins used an 8-1 advantage on ground balls in the first half to go into halftime with a 6-3 lead, which was also fueled by three goals in the last 1:46. Maryland's Courtney Hobbs (4g, 2a) and Jen Adams (3g, 3a) each had six points, while Princeton was led by Lauren Simone's three-goal performance. Princeton's Charlotte Kenworthy and Whitney Miller each scored two goals in the contest.
The Tigers got on the board first when Kenworthy beat Maryland's Alexis Venechanos at 19:04 of the first half, as Senior tri-captain Julie Shaner found her wide open in front. Maryland struck back with a goal by reserve Kelly Coppedge just 19 seconds later to even the score, and both teams would score goals to even the score at 2 in the next four minutes. Maryland's Hobbs scored the next two goals to give the Terrapins a 4-2 lead. Simone scored shortly thereafter, and it appeared that both teams would go into the half separated by one goal, but Maryland had other ideas. Buoyed by two goals, which were the result of strong transition offense, the Terrapins stormed to 6-3 halftime lead.
The Terrapins came out gunning in the second stanza, scoring the first four goals of the half to effectively take control of the game.
"I applaud Maryland's play tonight, and I am proud that my players continued to work hard until the end. We are disappointed that we lost, but this was a great season for our team," commented Princeton Coach Chris Sailer.
The Tigers end their season at 14-5 overall, and they treated fans to incredible tournament ride, as they posted decisive victories over Cornell and Dartmouth to advance to the Final Four. Maryland, the six-time defending National champions, will face the winner of the Georgetown-Loyola game in the NCAA finals on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Homewood Field.
"Maryland is such a talented team, and we really need to win more draws and ground balls to win this game," said Simone.
This was the final game for seniors Julia Beaver (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Dayna Federici (Maple Glen, Pa.) and Julie Shaner (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.).
