Princeton, N.J. - Expectations were high for the Princeton women's lacrosse team at the start of the 2001 women's lacrosse season, as the Tigers were ranked second nationally coming into the season. Head Coach Chris Sailer and her squad have not disappointed thus far, posting an impressive 6-1 Ivy League record (12-3 overall) to tie Dartmouth for the conference championship. The Big Green will receive the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, since they beat Princeton 13-5 earlier this season.
Tri-captains Julie Shaner (Sr., Midfield, Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) and Lauren Simone (Jr., Attack, Delran, N.J.) pace the offensive attack for the Tigers along with junior Kim Smith (Attack, Baltimore, Md.). Shaner is always around the ball, Simone leads the team in scoring with 46 points (28g, 18a) and Smith has a team-high 36 goals. Whitney Miller (So., Attack, Bishopville, Md.) and Charlotte Kenworthy (Jr., Attack, Frazier, Pa.) round out an impressive scoring attack. Senior tri-captain Dayna Federici (Defense, Maple Glen, Pa.) leads a talented defensive unit that has allowed more than nine goals only twice this season. Rachel Becker (Defense, Broomall, Pa.) leads the Tigers with 27 caused turnovers, Brooke Owens (Defense, Paoli, Pa.) is second on the team with 21 draw controls and Jess Nelson (So., Defense, E. Northport, N.Y.) has 24 groundballs. Freshman goalie Meghan McInnes (Baltimore, Md.) boasts a 7.15 goals-against average, and she has played well against tough competition.
Further, Sailer has received valuable contributions from her highly touted freshman class. Midfielder Theresa Sherry (Baltimore, Md.), who led the women's soccer team in goals in her first year of competition, has 19 goals this season. Katie Coyne (Midfield, Baltimore, Md.), Tara Hardiman (Attack, Baltimore, Md.) and Mary Beth Hogan (Midfield/Defense, Garden City, N.Y.) have all provided solid depth for the Tigers this year.
The Tigers play at No. 3-ranked Georgetown on Saturday, May 5 to complete their regular season, and the Tigers will find out where they will play in the NCAA tournament on Sunday, May 6 at 8:30 p.m. The women's NCAA selection show will be broadcast over the Internet at www.ncaalacrosse.com, and interested fans will need both Internet access and RealAudio in order to take part in the webcast.
