Baltimore, Md. - The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association announced the 2001 All-America teams on Monday, May 21, and four Princeton players received honors. Julie Shaner (Sr., Midfield, Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) and Rachael Becker (So., Defense, Broomall, Pa.) each were selected as first-team All-Americans. Junior attack Lauren Simone (Jr., Delran, N.J.) earned second-team All-American honors, while junior Kim Smith received third-team All-America accolades.
Shaner, who came into this season as a two-time All-American (2000 - first team, 1999 - second team), is Princeton's all-time leader in ground balls with 289 and has 164 points (109g, 55a) in 72 games. This season she led the Tigers with 56 ground balls, is second on the team with 30 caused turnovers, has a team-high 21 assists and scored 41 points (20g, 21a). Shaner was recently named as one of five finalists for the prestigious Tewaaraton Trophy, which is the award given to the finest male and female lacrosse players in the collegiate game.
Becker has played in every game in her two-year Princeton career, and she made a name for herself defending Maryland's Jen Adams on two occasions this season. In Princeton's 7-6 loss at Maryland on Wednesday, April 25 Becker held Adams to two goals, which was well below her season scoring average coming into the game. Becker leads the Tigers with 32 caused turnovers, and she is third on the team with 45 ground balls. Further, Becker's tremendous man-to-man defensive skills were on display in Maryland's 14-7 NCAA semifinal win over Princeton on Friday, April 18.
Simone, who originally walked on the women's lacrosse team as a freshman, posted her second-consecutive second-team All-America selection. While she tied for Kim Smith with the team scoring lead with 57 points in 2000, Simone grew as a leader and provided Coach Chris Sailer with a reliable scorer and big-game player. She led her team with 61 points (40g, 21a), and she served as a tri-captain during the 2001 campaign.
Representing Princeton as a third-team All-America selection, Kim Smith led the Tigers in goals (36) and was second is scoring with 42 points. A lethal scorer, Smith posted one six-goal performance and two four-goal games in 2001. She tied Simone by scoring a team-high 21 points (17g, 4a) in Ivy League play. Unfortunately, Smith's season ended prematurely when she took ill during the last week of the regular season, and she was unable to participate in the NCAA tournament as a result.
