Game Notes ...
Today's Note of the Day
No place like home - The road team has never won a game in the five contests played between Princeton and Georgetown.
Five more notes no media person should be without
D plus - Sophomore defender Rachel Becker (Broomall, Pa.) was named Ivy League Co-Defensive Player of the Week for her stellar play against Maryland and Brown. Against the No. 1-ranked Terrapins Becker held superstar Jen Adams, who came into the game averaging 6.87 points per game, to two goals. In fact, one of Adams goals came on a free position shot, which highlights how sound Becker's defensive effort was. She turned around and had five groundballs and three caused turnovers in Princeton's 12-6 win vs. Brown. Becker currently leads the team with 27 caused turnovers, and she is third with 35 ground balls.
Hoya destroyer - Tri-captain Julie Shaner had three goals and one assist in Princeton's 8-6 win versus Georgetown last season, but Georgetown's high scorer from last year's game Kristin Baer, who had two goals and one assist in last year's game, graduated in 2000.
Going out in style - Princeton seniors Julia Beaver, Dayna Federici and Julie Shaner played in their final game at the Class of 1952 Stadium in Princeton's 12-6 win versus Brown last Saturday. In that game Shaner scored four points (1g, 3a), and Beaver made her first two collegiate saves in reserve duty.
And down the stretch they come - Princeton's game at Georgetown will be its last of the 2001 regular season, and the matchup with No. 3 Hoyas ought to be a good barometer for how the Tigers will fare in the NCAA tournament.
A Tiger on the Hoya's sideline - Georgetown Head Coach Kim Simons graduated from Princeton in 1994, and was a member of the Tigers' National Champion team of 1994. She is 10th all-time in scoring at Princeton with 144 points and she is sixth all-time in goals scored (119g). She won the 1994 C. Otto Von Kienbusch Award, which is awarded annually to Princeton's finest senior female athlete, and Simons was named as the best women's lacrosse player of `90s at Old Nassau. Further, she is a three-time All-America selection (1994 - Second Team, 1992, 1993 - Third Team).
Others receiving votes
Double trouble - Summer Crabtree assisted on both of Nina Carbone's goals in the 12-6 win versus Brown last Saturday.
Common opponents - Princeton and Georgetown have played four common opponents this season: Duke, Maryland, Penn State and Rutgers. The Tigers are 3-1 against these familiar foes (Duke - W, 10-7, Maryland - L, 7-6, Penn State - W, 10-9, Rutgers - W, 16-3), while the Hoyas are 2-2 against common opponents (Duke - L, 8-7, Maryland - L, 13-9, Penn State - W, 13-11, Rutgers - W, 13-5).
Consistent contributer - Junior tri-captain Lauren Simone has scored a point in all 15 games that she has played in this year., she leads the team with 46 points (28g, 18a).
Shaner's understudy - Fresman Theresa Sherry (Baltimore, Md.), like senior All-America Julie Shaner (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.), is a force both on the soccer and lacrosse fields. She led the soccer team in goal scoring as a freshman, and Sherry has the highest shooting percentage (.463) for anyone on the lacrosse team that has taken more than 40 shots. Also, Sherry is second in groundballs (39), ranks fourth in caused turnovers (14) and is fourth in goals (19).
