Beijing, China - Danielle Stramandi, a Lawrenceville, N.J., native and a Princeton University senior, placed 12th in the platform competition of the World University Games. The Games were held in Beijing, China. Stramandi was one of six athletes to compete for the United States in the international competition.
Stramandi's 258.93 points placed her in the 12th position. She finished 103.08 points behind Rui Wang of China who won the platform competition with an impressive 362.01 score. Stramandi, who was consistent in the final round, scored low marks on her final dive that had a 2.9 degree of difficulty. A slim 20.19 point kept Stramandi from a top-8 finish. At the end of the semi-finals, Stramandi was in ninth place with a 154.35 score.
Earlier this year, Stramandi placed fourth on the platform at the 2001 Indoor National Diving Championships and third on the platform at the 2001 NCAA Division I Championships. Stramandi's third-place finish was the top individual performance at the nationals in Princeton's swimming and diving history and helped the Tigers finish 25th overall.
Placings at the 2001 Indoor Nationals (April 17-22, Midland Texas) were used to select team members. The top male and female on the 3-meter and platform made the squad, as well as the top combined male and female on both boards.
