PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) had another outstanding game to lead Princeton, ranked No. 5 in the latest STX/NFHCA poll, to a 4-0 win over Drexel this evening at Class of 1952 Stadium. Friebe registered her second-straight hat trick, the third of her career, to lead the Tigers' offensive attack.
"We are very excited by Ilvy's offensive output," said coach Beth Bozman. "We also recognize that a lot of her scoring opportunities are created by the efforts of the other offensive players. I also think that Emily (Townsend) played an outstanding game for us."
Friebe started the scoring at 27:16 of the first period when she received a pass from sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and was able to find the back of the cage to put the Tigers up 1-0. Freshman Ashley Sennett (Albion, Maine) scored her second goal of the season at 6:45 to give Princeton a two-goal lead going into the half. Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) got the play going with her shot on a penalty corner. Drexel goalkeeper Margaret Barrows deflected that shot, but the rebound bounced back to Sennet, who drilled it home for a 2-0 Tigers lead.
Princeton went ahead 3-0 when Friebe opened the second half scoring with a goal at 33:16. Her third goal of the evening came at 19:31 after junior Rachel Becker (Broomall, Mass.) fired a shot at Barrows, who was able to make the initial save. That rebound bounced back to Friebe whose first shot was blocked, but the third time proved to be the charm as her next shot made it past the diving Drexel goalie to provide the final 4-0 margin.
Princeton goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.), a junior, finished the game with four saves. She shared the shutout with junior Zehra Nizami (Hong Kong), who came on to play the last 17:26 of the game. Barrow turned in a strong performance for the Dragons, finishing with 14 saves.
The Tigers return to action on Wed., Sept. 13 when they face Columbia at 7 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
