PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Rachael Becker (Broomall, Pa.) scored at 30:23 of the second half to lead the Princeton (6-1, 2-0 Ivy) field hockey team, ranked No. 5 in last week's STX/NFHCA poll, to a 2-1 win over No. 3 Old Dominion (7-3, 1-0 CAA). It was only the second time in the program's history that the Tigers have defeated the Lady Monarchs. Princeton's only previous win came in the 1996 NCAA Final Four via a 4-3 overtime victory that propelled the Tigers into their first NCAA title game.
"We needed to have a big-game win," said head coach Beth Bozman. "We have been talking about how much talent we have, and I think that it was important to get that first big win to show ourselves where we are." Freshman Ashley Sennett (Albion, Maine) opened the scoring for the Tigers with 9:03 remaining in the first half when she registered her fourth goal of the season. Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany), the nation's leading scorer, picked up the assist on the goal as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Old Dominion's Julie Miracle tied the game at 1-1 with 31:10 remaining off an assist from Tiffany Snow but the Tigers responded less then a minute later. Sophomore Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) collected the ball just inside the right side of the circle and sent it across to Becker, who drilled what proved to be the game-winning goal into the back of the cage at 30:23.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) finished the game with three saves for the Tigers as she held Old Dominion, a team that exploded for a 9-0 win over Temple yesterday, to just one goal. Marybeth Freeman stopped six shots in goal for the Lady Monarchs.
Princeton, which was coming off Friday's 3-1 loss at No. 1 Maryland, will host Rutgers at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at Class of 1952 Stadium.
