PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Ilvy Friebe's (Bonn, Germany) two goals helped lead Princeton to a 4-2 win over Northeastern this afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. This is the ninth straight season that the Tigers have started the year off with a win.
"We were happy with our offensive output," said Princeton head coach Beth Bozman, "but I think that we have a few defensive aspects of our game that we need to improve upon."
Friebe opened the scoring for the Tigers at 16:12 of the first half when she was able to maneuver past several Huskies defenders and fire a shot into the back of the cage to put Princeton ahead, 1-0.
Freshman Ashley Sennett (Albion, Maine) scored the first goal of her collegiate career off of a pass from classmate Natalie Martirosian (Richmond, Va.) with just 3.9 seconds remaining in the first half to give Princeton a 2-0 lead going into the intermission. The Tigers added to their lead in the second half with unassisted goals from Friebe at 21:27, and Rachel Becker (Broomall, Pa.) at 20:21, to take a 4-0 lead.
Sarah Broderick's (Harwich, Mass.) goal off of a pass from Kelly Willams (Shoreham, N.Y.) put Northeastern on the board at 10:43 of the second half. Maureen Connelly (Greenland, N.H.) added another Huskies goal with 2:43 remaining to bring the score to 4-2, but that was as close as it would get as time ran out and Princeton came away with the victory.
Princeton goalkeeper Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) made six saves and allowed two goals while Huskies goalkeeper Kathleen Madaus (Boylston, Mass.) turned away 13 shots and allowed four goals.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow afternoon when they face Syracuse at 1 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
