PRINCETON, N.J. - Junior Ilvy Friebe (Bonn, Germany) registered the second three-goal performance of her collegiate career to help the Princeton field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Syracuse this afternoon at Class of 1952 Stadium. The win moves the Tigers to 2-0 on the season, while Syracuse drops to 2-1.
Friebe's first hat trick came in a 4-2 Princeton win over Boston University in 1999. This afternoon her first goal came at the 29:27 mark of the first period to put the Tigers up 1-0.
Sophomore Cory Picketts (Marmora, N.J.) added to that lead with her first goal of the season on a penalty corner with 5:25 left in the first half to send Princeton into the intermission with a 2-0 lead. Junior Kristen Skorupski (Hatfield, Mass.) and Claire Miller (Scarsdale, N.Y.) each picked up assists on the goal. Friebe opened the second half scoring when she collected the ball just inside the midfield line, dribbled through the Syracuse defense and blasted a shot into the right side of the cage at 16:23. Her third goal came at 12:41 after junior co-captain Emily Townsend's initial shot on a penalty corner was blocked by Syracuse goalkeeper Audrey Latsko (Emmanus, Pa.). The rebound came right back to Friebe, who drove it past the diving Syracuse netminder for a 4-0 lead.
Townsend scored Princeton's fifth and final goal of the day. Freshman Lizzie Black's (Gwynedd Valley, Pa.) initial shot on a penalty corner was saved but the rebound popped right back to Townsend, who was able to drive it home for a 5-0 lead.
Syracuse's Michelle Marks (Lititz, Pa.) broke the Tigers bid for a shutout with her goal at 8:06 of the second half but that was all the offense that the Orangewomen could muster as they were outshot 22-4.
Junior co-captain Kelly Baril (Peabody, Mass.) finished with two saves for the Tigers while allowing just one goal. Latsko saw Princeton fire off 22 shots and was able to make 7 saves, allowing 5 goals in the cage for the Orangewomen.
Princeton returns to action Thurs., Sept. 13 when it faces Drexel at 7 p.m. at Class of 1952 Stadium.
