Men's Soccer Team Opens Season With Convincing Win Over Monmouth
September 08, 2001 | Men's Soccer
Freshman Adrian Melville got things started by netting the first Princeton goal of the 2001 season, scoring off an assist from junior Matt Douglas at the 12:42 mark. Nugent followed with his first goal of the night to put the Tigers up 2-0. Senior Matt Behncke then scored off an assist from Marty Shaw to give Princeton a 3-0 lead at the half.
Nugent tallied his second goal of the night off an assist from freshman Ryan Rich at 50:14. Rich completed the Princeton scoring attack with an unassisted goal at the 65:30 mark as the Tigers cruised to their first win of the year. Shaw finished the night with two assists. Behncke, Douglas and Rich chipped in with an assist apiece.
"This was a great way to begin the year," said Princeton coach Jim Barlow. "Our offense gave us a cushion and our players did a good job of getting the ball down the field. We have a good mix of veteran leadership and youth on this team. There is a lot to look forward to. Overall, I am very pleased with this win."
Princeton will next be action on Thursday, Sept. 13 when it hosts Fairleigh-Dickinson on Lourie-Love Field at 7:30 p.m.
