Princeton, N.J. - Maurice Chapman scored two touchdowns in the first three minutes of Friday night's sprint football game at Princeton to lead the United States Naval Academy to its fifth victory of the season. Navy used a quick-striking offense to build an early lead and cruise to a 59-8 win over Princeton in the Tigers' final home game of the season.
Navy scored on its first offensive play of the night when Chris Asinhurst connected with Champman on a 35-yard slant. Champman scored on the third play of Navy's next drive, jaunting 18 yards to paydirt and giving the Midshipmen a 14-0 lead. A safety off of a Princeton punt attempt and a 35-yard run by Randall Leslie had the Blue and Gold up 23-0 after one quarter of play.
The Midshipmen continued to score in the second half with Asinhurst tossing two more touchdown passes; a nine-yard play to Joel Gow and a 26-yard pass to Adam Matthews. Charles Nash connected on a 38-yard field goal and the halftime scoreboard read 40-0. The Tigers held the ball for most of the night, but could not sustain a drive in the game's first three quarters. Navy ran the ball in the second half, scoring 19 third-quarter points off of three rushing touchdowns. Hayden Stevens ran the first from 17-yards out, Thomas Schmitz scored on a 39-yard run and Jake Owens found the endzone with an eight-yard scamper late in the third quarter.
Princeton put together its best drive of the night, a 15 play, 65-yard drive that culminated in a four-yard Matt Worley score. The drive, however, took 7:10 off the clock and despite recovering the ensuing on-sides kick, the Tigers would not score again.
Navy finished the game with 357 yards of offense. Asinhurst had 170 yards passing while six different runners finished with 20 or more yards on the ground. Dennis Bakke threw for 85 yards for Princeton as Rikki Racela led all Tiger rushers with 50 yards on 16 carries.
Princeton has the bye next week and concludes the 2002 season on Friday, Nov. 8 at Pennsylvania. The Tigers fall to 0-5 on the year and 0-3 in the CSFL. Navy sits atop the conference standings with a 5-0 overall record and a 2-0 conference mark. The Midshipmen host Penn next Friday and close out the year with Army in the Star Game on Nov. 8.
