Princeton, N.J. - Princeton University has been announced as the site for the 2004 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championships. The University will host the Final Four with two games on May 21 and the national championship contest on May 23.
"We are excited, pleased and honored to receive the NCAA bid to host the women's lacrosse tournament," says Princeton athletics director Gary D. Walters. "Our coaches and administrative staff are looking forward to conducting a first-class event on behalf of the participating student athletes."
Princeton has played host once before, serving as the national championship site in 1990 when top-seeded Harvard won the NCAA title with an 8-7 win over Maryland. The Terrapins have played host more than any other school, having six Final Fours at College Park, including the 1994 Final Four where Princeton won its first national title with a 10-7 win over Maryland in the final game.
Last season, the Tigers won their second national title in program history with a 12-7 win over Georgetown at Loyola College in Baltimore, Md. The 2003 women's lacrosse championships will be held at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.
The 2004 championships will be played at Princeton Stadium, a 27,800-seat venue that is home to the Tiger football team each fall. The $45 million facility opened to raves in 1998 and hosted the men's lacrosse quarterfinals in 1999. Princeton Stadium is yet to host a championship event.
"Princeton Stadium is a beautiful facility and we know it will be a fantastic venue for the national championship," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "Lacrosse is such a big sport at Princeton and in the tri-state area, so we expect this championship weekend to attract large crowds and to be a very memorable one for the participants and spectators alike."
