Tigers Open Regular Season This Weekend

The Game - Princeton opens the regular season hosting fifth-ranked North Dakota at Baker Rink. The Tigers are 1-1-0 in season openers under head coach Len Quesnelle.
Prior History - Princeton has faced North Dakota once, a 5-4 loss at the Bank One Badger Showdown on Dec. 30, 2000 in Milwaukee, Wis. The team's met in the tournament's consolation game after Princeton fell to Wisconsin and North Dakota lost to Boston University. Several current Tigers played in that game. Matt Maglione and Scott Prime each tallied goals and Steve Slaton (2), Chris Owen, George Parros and Prime added assists. Nate Nomeland made a career high 60 saves in the loss.
Scouting the Fighting Sioux - North Dakota is 4-0-0 this season. The Fighting Sioux opened the season winning the Xerox College Hockey Showcase in Buffalo, N.Y. There, they defeated Canisius, 8-0 and Michigan, 5-4 in overtime. Last weekend, North Dakota swept Niagara in a pair of game in Grand Forks. They topped the Purple Eagles by scores of 6-4 and 5-3.
Last Time Out - Princeton took to the ice last weekend in a pair of exhibition games against the U.S. National Under-18 team and Western Ontario. On Saturday, Matt Maglione, Dan Hursh and George Parros scored in the Tigers' 3-1 win over the Under-18 team. On Sunday, five different Tigers scored as Princeton topped Western Ontario, 5-0. Luc Paquin scored the game-winner while Mike Patton and Tommy Colclough each posted a goal and an assist. A Look Forward - The Tigers complete this weekend on the road at No. 11 Providence. The Friars, 5-0-0* have wins over UMass-Lowell, Union and Minnesota State-Mankato this season. Next weekend Princeton begins ECAC play when they travel to Colgate on Friday and eighth ranked Cornell on Saturday.
A Look Back - In 2001-02, the Tigers posted a 11-18-2 overall record. They had a 10-10-2 ECAC record which placed them sixth in the ECAC regular season standings.
Future Stars - Two current Princeton Tigers are currently drafted by National Hockey League teams. George Parros was selected by Los Angeles Kings in eighth round of the 1999 NHL entry draft and Matt Maglione was chosen in the eighth round of the 2001 NHL entry draft by the Washington Capitals.
Reloaded - Princeton returns 18 letterwinners from a team that finished last year's regular season with a five game unbeaten streak. Seven seniors have graduated, but Princeton welcomes two familiar faces back to the lineup in Tommy Colclough and Marc Hounjet. Also, Princeton adds nine freshman in to the mix this season.
Filling The Void - Seven seniors graduated from the Princeton hockey program last season. They are David Bennett, David Del Monte, Ryan Kraliz, Brad Parsons, Josh Roberts, David Schneider and Dave Stathos.
Whose in Goal - All three Tiger goaltenders played a period in each of Princeton's exhibition games over the weekend. Trevor Clay and Eric Leroux were each credited with a win, while Nate Nomeland turned aside 13 shots, the most of the three goaltenders.
Captain Parros - Senior George Parros was named the 2002-03 Tiger captain at the conclusion of last season. Parros is Princeton's leading returning scorer with 20 goals and 25 assists in 89 career games. Scott Prime and Neil McCann were named assistant captains.
Underclassmen - The Princeton lineup currently boasts 17 freshmen and sophomores. The Tigers largest class is the Class of '06, which has nine members.
Right At .500 - The last two seasons Princeton has had an ECAC record right at .500. It marks the first time in the history of the hockey program at Princeton that the team has recorded back-to-back season at or above .500 in conference play
Closing In On 425 - Princeton is three wins away from recording its 425th win at Baker Rink. The Tigers are 422-412-55 at home in the 71 seasons they have played at Baker Rink.
Moving On Up - Four members of Princeton's Hockey's Class of '02 have moved on to professional hockey. Forward Brad Parsons signed with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League and has tallied seven assists in eight games this season. Defenseman David Schneider is now with the East Coast Hockey League's Trenton Titans. In eight games this season, he has posted two assists. Forward David Del Monte joined the ECHL's Lexington Men-O-War. In seven games, he has recorded a goal and an assist. Goaltender Dave Stathos is currently playing professionally in Finland.
