Penn State scored three first half goals and held on to defeat Princeton 3-2 in Sunday afternoon's NCAA second-round game. Ilvy Friebe scored both Tiger goals as Princeton fell to 12-7 to complete the 2002 season.
Penn State opened the scoring early, cashing in on a penalty corner at 2:53. Heather Conroy took a shot from the top of the circle that goalkeeper Kelly Baril gt a piece of but could not control as it bounced over her into the net.
The Nittany Lions extended the lead to 2-0 at 19:05 when Jill Martz scored off a corner. Heather Rigby passed her the ball and then she fired a shot from just inside the circle.
Princeton answered back at 22:33 when Ilvy Friebe scored her 24th goal of the season. Friebe had successive chances in front, the first being blocked by Penn State defender Neilye Stoner, before scoring on her second shot.
Penn State scored less than a minute later to make it a 3-1 game. Following a corner, Conry scored her second goal of the game at 24:25. The Tigers countered right back as Friebe carried the ball into the circle and fired a shot past Annie Zinkavich.
That was all the scoring for the game. Princeton had several chances to tied the game up in the second half but could not make the most of the opportunities.
Princeton completes the season at 12-7.
