Washington, D.C. - Rachael Becker and Lauren Simone were named candidates for the Tewaaraton Trophy, the most prestigious award a varsity lacrosse player can receive, by The University Club of Washington, D.C. over the weekend.
The Tewaaraton Trophy, presented annually following the collegiate season to the top female and male varsity lacrosse players in the United States, is rewarded as a symbol of excellence in college lacrosse. Every eligible varsity player in Divisions I, II, and III is considered a nominee. The 12 preseason candidates, chosen over the weekend, will be joined by five wild-card spots left open for new candidates who emerge during the season and from that list, five finalists will be announced in May.
Becker was a first-team All-America honoree last season and led the Tiger defense with 32 caused turnovers. She also picked up 45 ground balls in leading Princeton to a 14-5 overall record. Simone was a second-team All-America selection after leading Princeton to an Ivy title with a team-high 61 points, 40 goals and 21 assists.
Becker, Simone and the Tigers open the 2002 season at Class of 1952 Stadium on Sunday, March 3 against Georgetown. The Tewaaraton Trophy Awards Dinner will be on Wednesday, June 5 at The University Club of Washington, D.C.
