Julian Gould made 13 saves while allowing three goals and B.J. Prager scored four times to lead Princeton to a 12-4 win over Hofstra in front of 1,647 at Class of 1952 Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The victory was eighth-ranked Princeton's first in three games, while No. 11 Hofstra slipped to 2-3. Princeton will host Syracuse in a rematch of the last two NCAA championship games next Saturday, March 23. Either Syracuse or Princeton has won the NCAA tournament 12 times in the last 14 years.
"We worked pretty hard all week," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney, whose team defeated Syracuse 10-9 in overtime this past Memorial Day for the most recent NCAA title. "It's good to get one in the bank."
Hofstra scored the first goal of the game at the 3:13 mark, but it would be a span of 50:24 before the Pride would score again. During that stretch Princeton would score 10 goals and break the game open. The key man was Gould, the junior goalie who is starting in place of the graduated Trevor Tierney, last year's national goalie of the year. Gould made some big saves in the second quarter, especially on back-to-back point-blank shots by Hofstra's leading scorer Tom Kessler, to allow Princeton to take control.
"Trevor was the best goalie in Division I lacrosse last year," said Gould. "They're big shoes to fill. Coach T just tells me what my job is, and I just concentrate on doing that during the game. I'm lucky to have such a good defense in front of me. Those guys make it so much easier."
Princeton led 3-1 after three goals, two by Dan Clark, in a 57-second span midway through the first quarter, and Prager's first made it 4-1 at halftime. Prager then scored three more in the third quarter.
Ryan Boyle finished with three goals and two assists, while Brad Dumont joined Clark with two goals.
