Brian Solliday and Jarrett Park scored 11 seconds apart midway through the fourth quarter to erase Princeton's final lead and spark Syracuse to an 11-8 win in a matchup of teams that have combined to win 12 of the last 14 NCAA championships.
The game was played in front of a crowd of 5,476, the largest ever to see a game at the Class of 1952 Stadium. The previous record was 4,743, set in 2000 when Princeton hosted Syracuse.
No. 2 Syracuse improved to 5-1, while eighth-ranked Princeton slipped to 1-3. The teams have met in each of the last two NCAA championship games, won by Syracuse in 2000 and Princeton last Memorial Day.
"It was a great lacrosse game," said Princeton coach Bill Tierney. "They made the plays when they had to."
Princeton led 4-0 early in the second quarter and 8-7 early in the fourth before Syracuse took control, scoring the final four goals of the day. It started on a Solliday goal with 8:18 to play to make it an 8-8 game, and Park scored 11 seconds later after winning the face-off and coming straight down the field to put the Orangemen back on top. Spencer Wright and Sean Lindsey sealed it with goals in the final six minutes. Princeton dominated the first 18 minutes, using a pair of goals from Matt Trevenen and one each from B.J. Prager, off a Trevenen feed, and Damien Davis to build the 4-0 lead. Trevenen would add another goal to give him three, more than had for his career prior to the game.
Syracuse, though, scored four straight second quarter goals to make it 4-4 at halftime and a fifth goal to start the third quarter for its first lead. Trevenen's third tied it at 5-5 with 5:36 to go in the third, and Owen Daly and Josh White made it 7-5 Princeton. Wright, who finished with three goals, scored on a feed from Michael Powell with 2:03 left in the third to make it 7-6, and Josh Coffman's third goal tied it to start the fourth.
Princeton returns to Class of 1952 Stadium Tuesday night to take on Rutgers before heading into the Ivy League season next Saturday at home against Yale. Syracuse hosts Hobart Wednesday.
