Princeton scored five goals in a 4:16 span of the third quarter to break open a tight game en route to 12-7 win over Cornell in front of 3,114 at the Class of 1952 Stadium. The win was the 200th of Princeton coach Bill Tierney's collegiate career, with 34 at Rochester Institute of Technology and 166 at Princeton.
Princeton, ranked eighth, won its fourth straight while ending No. 5 Cornell's nine-game winning streak. The Tigers were playing as the lower-ranked team in an Ivy League game for the first time since 1990.
A Cornell win would have ended Princeton's run of seven straight Ivy titles. Now, should Princeton win next week at Dartmouth and May 4 at Brown, the Tigers would earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
"We knew what was at stake," said Princeton defenseman Brian Lieberman. "We knew how good they were. We were ready to play." Cornell scored first 1:52 into the game and led 2-1 on Andrew Collins' goal with 3:50 to go in the first. Cornell would then score only once more, a fluke Sean Greenhalgh goal that he checked out of Damien Davis' stick into the net, for the next 36:55.
Greenhalgh had scored a Cornell freshman record 32 goals coming into the game and had 11 last week, including six against Syracuse. Shadowed all day by Scott Farrell in front of the net, Greenhalgh's goal came on his lone shot.
"Our defense was terrific," said Tierney. "They made a lot of big individual plays, picked up a bunch of loose balls and played together well."
Princeton tied it at 2-2 after the first quarter and led 4-3 at the half and then exploded in the third quarter. The Tigers first killed off a Cornell two-man advantage and then squandered two man-up situations of their own, keeping it a one-goal game through the first six minutes of the quarter.
From there, it was all Tigers. Dan Clark started it with a one-on-one run with 6:10 gone. Greg Golaszewski then scooped up the loose ball off the face-off and scored 13 seconds later. Little over a minute later, Sean Hartofilis then scored twice in eight seconds, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Ryan Boyle capped the run with a goal with 4:34 remaining in the quarter, and Josh White scored 1:11 into the fourth to make it 10-3.
Cornell answered by scoring the next three, making it 10-6 with 9:48 to go. Princeton's defense stopped several Cornell chances from there, and Brad Dumont and B.J. Prager sealed it with late goals.
"There was nothing complicated about it," said Boyle, who had one goal and three assists, all in the second half. "We moved the ball around. We got shots. We made them. We weren't worried about who was going to get the goal or who was going to get the assist. We just wanted to win."
Hartofilis had three goals for the Tigers, while White matched Boyle with one goal and three assists. Collins and Justin Redd had two goals each for Cornell.
Julian Gould outdueled Cornell All-America Justin Cynar in goal, making 11 saves to nine for Cynar. Princeton outshot Cornell by one 32-31 and had a 31-19 edge in ground balls.
The Tigers honored their lacrosse Class of 1992 at halftime on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the first of Princeton's six NCAA championships. The ceremony included a remembrance of both John Schroeder, a defenseman in Princeton's Class of 1992, and Cornell's Eamon McEneaney, a three-time first-team All-America in the mid-'70s, both of whom were killed in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. Schroeder's father Jack stood with his son's classmates during the ceremony on the field.
