Princeton, N.J. - In 1994, Princeton defeated Maryland in the NCAA Finals and won its first national championship. Since then, Maryland has won each of the last seven national titles, dominating the lacrosse world and keeping Princeton hungry for its second championship. On Wednesday night at Class of 1952 Stadium, Princeton and Maryland meet in a regular season showdown and for the first time in quite some time, Princeton will be favored.
The Tigers enter Wednesday's game ranked No. 1 in the IWLCA Poll and are currently enjoying the country's longest winning streak at 13 games. Princeton is 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the Ivy League, clinching at least a share of the Ivy title with last Saturday's win over Dartmouth. Maryland is fresh off a loss to North Carolina in the ACC Championship game on Sunday. The Terrapins come in at No. 8 in the nation with a 9-7 overall record.
Princeton and Maryland have played each other 20 times in program history and six of those games were in the NCAA postseason. The Tigers have played the Terps in three NCAA championship games, winning one and losing two. Maryland and Princeton split NCAA Semifinal matches, but the Terps lead the all-time series 17-3. Maryland is the only school on Princeton's schedule to currently posses a winning streak against the Tigers. The Terrapins have won the last 11 contests with Princeton. The Tigers enter Wednesday night with senior Lauren Simone leading the offensive charge and freshman goalkeeper Sarah Kolodner managing the net. Simone is tied for the league lead in goals with 36 and has 10 assists through 14 games this season. Sophomore Theresa Sherry is right behind Simone with 35 goals and 10 assists of her own.
Kolodner registered a career-high 13 saves against Dartmouth last Saturday and improved to a perfect 12-0 as a starter in goal. Junior Rachael Becker is having an All-America season at defense with 37 ground balls and 35 caused turnovers. Princeton's offense has more than doubled its opponents goal total with 204 goals while the Tiger defense has held teams to a combined 98 goals this season.
Maryland will become Princeton's seventh opponent currently ranked in the nation's Top-10. The Tigers have a 5-1 record against the country's top teams and they will have played everyone now ranked in the Top-10 with the exception of No. 3 North Carolina and No. 10 Notre Dame.
Wednesday's game is a 7:30 p.m. contest. The game will be broadcast by CN8 and can be heard live on Princeton's official athletic Web site, www.GoPrincetonTigers.com.
