Princeton, N.J. - The Tewaaraton Trophy women's selection committee announced Princeton's Rachael Becker as a finalist for college lacrosse's most prestigious award. Becker joins five finalists in the running for the for the second annual Tewaaraton Trophy, presented to the top female and male lacrosse players in the nation. The winner will be announced at a reception on June 5 at the University Club of Washington, DC.
The candidates' list of 21 of the best female lacrosse players in the country was narrowed down to Becker, Lauren Aumiller and Tiffany Schummer of Virginia, Erin Elbe from Georgetown and Christine McPike from North Carolina. All five candidates hail from teams that finished the regular season ranked in the IWLCA Poll's top four.
"This is a great honor for Rachael," says Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "She is a tremendous one-on-one defender and her teammates only make her better. She is one of, if not the best defensive stopper in the county and she is very deserving of this nomination." Becker finished the season with a team-high 47 ground balls and a team-high 44 caused turnovers. She had 18 draw controls while leading a Princeton defense that held opponents to less than half of the offense's goal total. Becker marked the opposition's top offensive scoring threat all season and logged a team-high 889 minutes.
Princeton finished the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation with a 15-1 overall record and an Ivy League Championship. The Tigers earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament and open postseason play tomorrow afternoon against Le Moyne at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The University Club will have all five female and all five male finalists, as well as some of the biggest names in college lacrosse in attendance at its June 5th reception. Legendary U.S. Coach Jackie Pitts will present the trophy to the female winner and Oneida Nation member and former National Lacrosse League player Ron Hill will present the trophy to the male winner.
