Brea Griffiths scored in the 82nd minute and Kristina Fontanez added another goal 2:37 later to lead 23rd-ranked Princeton to a 2-0 win over Monmouth in women's soccer at Lourie-Love Field.
The win improved Princeton to 5-0 on the season, while Monmouth slipped to 3-3. The Tigers, who are 2-0 in the Ivy League, have not trailed at any point in their first five games.
"I knew it would be this kind of game," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "We were coming off a big win [4-1 Saturday over league rival Dartmouth], and this was going to be tough psychologically."
The teams played through 81 minutes of scoreless soccer before Griffiths, a sophomore defender and two-year starter, scored her first career goal. The play started on a cross from Kelly Sosa that was redirected by Krista Ariss, who picked up the assist when Griffiths blasted it into the goal from in front. Princeton doubled its lead 2:37 later when Kristina Fontanez scored on the rebound of a Rochelle Willis shot.
"We knew we had plenty of time left," Griffiths said. "We just had to keep pushing forward and getting off as many shots as possible."
Princeton dominated play, outshooting the Hawks 31-3 for the night. Princeton took 23 of its shots after intermission. The Tigers appeared to snap the tie when Ariss scored just after halftime, but the Tigers were called for offsides. Griffiths had another big opportunity five minutes before her goal, when she was robbed by Monmouth 'keeper Abby Shiffler on a drive from 25 yards out. Shiffler made nine saves on the night.
Princeton is at Boston College Friday and Boston University Sunday.
