Esmeralda Negron redirected a pass from Joan Cundey to give Princeton the lead early in the second half and Emily Behncke sealed it with a low drive with six minutes remaining to lead the 18th ranked Princeton women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over George Mason Wednesday night.
The victory left Princeton at 8-0-0 on the season. The Tigers are one of four undefeated, untied teams in Division I, along with Stanford, Oklahoma State and UTEP.
"We stayed patient," Negron said. "We upped our work rate in the second half, and we took advantage of some opportunities."
Krista Ariss scored the first goal of the night off an assist from Rochelle Willis at the 21:58 mark, but George Mason's Katy McGee tied it 10 minutes later off a rebound. The game stayed tied through halftime until Negron's goal put the Tigers up again at 56:58. Negron's goal tied her with Kristina Fontanez for the team lead with five goals. "Esmeralda's goal was beautiful," said Princeton coach Julie Shackford. "It was a great setup by Joanie Cundey. Usually on midweek games, you come out after 4:30 classes and you're not into it. I thought we played well from the start. The first 25 minutes were our best."
Behncke's goal, the third for the freshman, came on long drive from outside the 18 off an assist from Kelly Sosa at the 84:13 mark.
Princeton outshot George Mason 22-6. Sarah Couglin made seven saves while allowing one goal in 45 minutes for the Patriots, while Naomi Hines made two saves and allowed two goals in the second half. Jean Poster made two saves for Princeton.
The Tigers, 2-0 in the Ivy League, play at Columbia Saturday (2:30).
