A B1G Week for Women's Soccer at Top-10 Ohio State, Rutgers

The defending Ivy League champion Princeton women's soccer team will face a pair of Big Ten teams this week, visiting No. 8 Ohio State on Thursday night before taking on Rutgers on Sunday evening.

The Tigers are 2-1 on the season after opening with a 3-0 win over Loyola Maryland and falling 3-0 at Syracuse two weekends ago before returning home Sunday to defeat James Madison 2-0. Isabella Garces scored both goals in the win over James Madison, giving her three of Princeton's five goals on the season. Princeton has outscored opponents 5-3, outshot them 50-23 overall and 21-13 on goal, and has held an 18-11 edge in corner kicks through three games.
Garces leads Princeton with six points on three goals, while Dylan Jovanovic has a goal and an assist, and Kayla Wong has a team-best three assists. Maddie Recupero has Princeton's other goal, while Stella Monberg, Anna Chau and Mariana Gomez have one assist apiece. Monberg leads the Tigers with nine shots, while Garces and Recupero have six shots each.
Cecilia Cerone and Sydney Romano have split time in goal through the first three games, with each playing 135 minutes. Cerone has a 0.67 goals-against average, while Romano has made nine saves and has an .818 save percentage. Princeton has posted two shutouts in its first three games.
Princeton was picked first in the Ivy League preseason poll, receiving 120 points and 10 of the 16 first-place votes. The Tigers are coming off their second straight Ivy League title after going 5-2 in league play last season and closing the regular season with five straight wins on the way to the the league championship.
Against the Top 10
Ohio State was ranked No. 8 in the Sept. 1 United Soccer Coaches poll, giving Princeton its first top-10 opponent of the season. Since Sean Driscoll became Princeton's head coach in 2015, the Tigers are 3-8-2 against United Soccer Coaches top-10 teams, with wins over No. 2 North Carolina in the 2017 NCAA Tournament, No. 9 Rutgers in 2021 and No. 10 Georgetown in 2023. Expanding to the full top 25, Princeton is 6-12-4 under Driscoll against United Soccer Coaches-ranked opponents.Â
On Ohio State
Ohio State is 2-0-1 after opening the season with a 0-0 draw at No. 25 Clemson, defeating No. 12 Kansas 1-0 and topping Kentucky 2-1. The Buckeyes were ranked No. 19 when they defeated Kansas and moved up to No. 8 before the Kentucky game, their highest ranking since Oct. 2, 2023.
Against Kentucky, Ohio State got goals from Jadin Bonham in the 21st minute and Sydney Bering in the 72nd minute, with Riley Lijewski assisting on Bering's goal, as the Buckeyes held on for a 2-1 win. Ohio State outshot Kentucky 17-13 and held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal.
The Buckeyes were picked fifth in the Big Ten preseason poll, behind Michigan State, UCLA, Washington and Wisconsin. Amanda Schlueter, Ava Bramblett and Ava Greco were named Big Ten Players to Watch. Schlueter was a first-team All-Big Ten honoree last season after starting all 22 matches and leading Ohio State with 11 goals and five assists. Bramblett was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree, while Greco played in all four NCAA Tournament matches during Ohio State's run to the quarterfinals.
Ohio State is coming off an 11-5-6 season in 2025, when the Buckeyes earned their sixth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and reached their first NCAA quarterfinal since 2010.
Series vs. Ohio State
Ohio State won the only previous meeting between the programs, defeating Princeton 4-1 at Roberts Stadium last season. Alexandra Barry scored Princeton's goal in that game, one of her two goals during an injury-shortened 2025 season, while Aubrey Crisostomo picked up her first career point with an assist against the Buckeyes while Nina Cantor also had an assist on the goal. Elle Britt, Jacinda Bonham, Ava Greco and Amanda Schlueter had the goals for OSU, while Cecilia Cerone played the full 90 between the posts and made three saves for Princeton. Neither keeper from last year's game, Arden La-Rose and and Molly Pritchard, are back for OSU. Thursday's game will be Princeton's first trip to Columbus to face Ohio State.
On Rutgers
Rutgers is 0-1-3 after playing Providence to a 3-3 draw Sunday night at Yurcak Field. The Scarlet Knights opened the season with a 4-1 loss at No. 24 Tennessee before playing scoreless draws at UConn and Fairfield, then tied Providence in their home opener.
Rutgers led Providence 2-0 in the first half on goals from Ashley Baran in the second minute and Reilly McGlinn in the 19th minute. After Providence cut the margin to 2-1 early in the second half, Rutgers went ahead 3-1 on a team goal in the 55th minute, but Providence scored twice in the final six minutes to earn the draw.
Through four games, Rutgers has scored four goals and allowed seven while taking 58 shots to its opponents' 49. The Scarlet Knights have put 15 shots on goal, allowed 29 shots on goal, and hold a 24-20 edge in corner kicks. Baran, Emma Johns and McGlinn have one goal apiece, while Lilia Calvert and Gabriela Gil have one assist each. Olivia Bodmer has played all 360 minutes in goal, making 21 saves with a .750 save percentage and two shutouts.
Rutgers was picked 15th in the Big Ten preseason poll, and Gabriela Gil, Olivia Bodmer and Ashley Baran were named Big Ten Players to Watch.
Series vs. Rutgers
Rutgers leads the all-time series with Princeton 18-11-6. The programs have played twice during the careers of current Tigers, with both games ending in draws at Roberts Stadium. Princeton and Rutgers played to a 0-0 tie in 2023, with Olivia Bodmer making seven saves for Rutgers, and the teams tied 1-1 last season, with Bodmer making eight saves and Cecilia Cerone making three for Princeton while going the distance in goal. Zoe Markesini scored Princeton's goal in the 2025 meeting. Princeton is 1-1-3 against Rutgers in the last five meetings, a stretch that includes a 4-3 win at No. 9 Rutgers in 2021.
Tigers in the Pros
Tyler McCamey '25 recently signed with FC Barcelona Femení after beginning her professional career with Gotham FC, Kansas City Current and Dallas Trinity FC. McCamey was a first-team All-Ivy League and first-team United Soccer Coaches All-Region selection in 2024 and helped Princeton win Ivy League championships in 2023 and 2024.
Several other Princeton women's soccer alumnae have continued their careers professionally, including Mimi Asom '19, who has played in Sweden and for the Nigerian national team, and other Tigers who have competed across professional leagues in the United States and abroad.
