New York, N.Y. - Emily Behncke's goal in the 32nd minute lifted the Princeton women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Columbia at the Baker Field Complex Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers improved to 9-0-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the Ivy League and joined UTEP as the only remaining teams in Division I women's soccer who are undefeated and untied. Stanford, who lost to North Carolina, and Oklahoma State, who lost to Iowa State, each suffered their first loss Friday. UTEP hosts Boise State Sunday.
"It was a tough game," said Princeton coach Juile Shackford. "It's never easy to play at Columbia. It's good to get a league win on the road."
Princeton, who won at Columbia for only the second time since 1990, scored the only goal of the day when freshman Maura Gallagher came down the left side, beat a defender and crossed the ball in the middle, where her classmate Behncke one-timed it into the goal. Behncke has now scored in back-to-back games and has four for the season.
Princeton controlled the game, outshooting Columbia 17-9. The Lions best chance came in the second half, when Tiger goalie Jean Poster stopped Courtney Nasshorn on a point-blank shot from seven yards out.
Princeton, who has shut out five of its nine opponents, hosts Rutgers Tuesday night (7:30). The Scarlet Knights are the last team to have beaten Princeton, having defeated the Tigers 1-0 in the second round of the 2001 NCAA tournament.
