Ohio State scored three third period goals to skate past Princeton 4-1 in the first game of the Post-Standard College Hockey Showcase at the Mellon Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. Princeton's lone goal was a power-play tally by Steve Slaton.
Both teams had strong scoring opportunities in the first period with Ohio State holding a 14-7 shot advantage. The Buckeyes broke through in the second period, scoring at 13:01 to take a 1-0 lead. The goal came on a shot from R.J. Umberger that barely trickled past Princeton goaltender Nate Nomeland and over the goal line. Reed Whiting and Scott Titus assisted on Umberger's 16th goal.
Princeton evened the game up 4:01 later when Steve Slaton slapped home his first goal of the season. His power-play goal from the point deflected off an Ohio State skate and through goaltender Mike Betz's legs. Mike Patton and Chris Owen assisted on the power-play goal to help send Princeton to the locker room tied at one. Ohio State regained a lead that they would never surrender at 2:28 of the third period when Rod Pelley beat Nomeland five-hole. The game remained a one-goal contest until late in the third period when Scott May scored on a breakaway and Miguel Lafleche scored an empty-netter.
Nomeland made 34 saves in the loss while Betz made 19 saves to earn his 11th win.
