Let's Play the Feud... The Princeton men's hockey continues its ECAC schedule this weekend on the road at Harvard and Brown.
Last Time Out... The Tigers fell to 0-4-0 on the season following a pair of league losses at home last weekend. On Friday, Colgate's Jon Smyth scored 30 seconds into overtime to lift the Raiders to a 3-2 win over Princeton and on Saturday, Cornell topped the Tigers 7-0.
The Series with Harvard... Princeton and Harvard will face off for the 194th time on Friday night. Harvard leads the series 138-46-9 overall and 66-12-4 at home. Princeton won the final meeting of 2002-03 against the Crimson 2-1.
Scouting the Crimson... Harvard is 1-1-1 on the season. After a season-opening loss at home to Brown, Harvard went on the road last weekend and earned three points by defeating Vermont 6-4 and tying Dartmouth 2-2.
Top Tigers vs. Harvard... Four players in the Tiger lineup have recorded multiple points in their careers vs. Harvard. Leading the group is senior Chris Owen who has five goals in five games, including two in both games last season. Senior Matt Maglione and junior Mike Patton each have three assists against the Crimson, while junior Neil Stevenson-Moore has two points. Cambridge State of Mind... Harvard's home ice, the Bright Hockey Center, has been kinder to the Tigers lately, as Princeton is 6-3-2 in its last 11 games there. Additionally, Princeton enters with an unbeaten streak of four at Harvard.
Scouting the Bears... Brown opened the season by shutting out Harvard for the second straight season. Last weekend the Bears split 3-1 decisions, defeating Vermont and falling to Dartmouth.
Top Tigers vs. Brown... Seniors Chris Owen and Steve Slaton lead the way for Princeton against Brown. Each has recorded four points against the Bears in eight games played. Senior Matt Maglione has two goals and an assist in his career against Brown.
Providence State of Pain... While Princeton has excelled at Harvard lately, the Tigers have struggled in Providence. Princeton has lost five straight games in Rhode Island's capital, including one to Providence College and three to Brown last season.

Junior Jesse Masear is currently in a tie for Princeton's team lead in points with sophomore Brian Carthas. Masear earned an assist on junior Neil Stevenson-Moore's goal at St. Cloud State and scored his first collegiate goal on the power play last weekend to give Princeton a 2-1 lead early in the second period against Colgate in an eventual 3-2 overtime loss.
Here's his look back on last weekend's games and a look ahead to this weekend's games at Harvard and Brown.
Masear looking back... "Last weekend there were a few mistakes that cost us, but the outcomes could have gone either way."
Masear looking forward... "We are getting better systematically, and the work ethic is there. Now it is just a matter of putting it all together and that starts this weekend." |
Rankings Game... Harvard climbed to No. 12 in both national polls this week, while Brown received votes in both as well. Going back to the start of 2002-03, Princeton is 1-9-0 against ranked teams, the lone win being a 2-1 triumph at Harvard last January. The losses came to North Dakota, Providence, Ohio State, Cornell (3), Harvard and St. Cloud State (2). Interestingly enough, in that same period, Harvard has not beaten any ranked teams.
New England Homecoming... When the Tigers travel to Harvard and Brown, four New England natives will be playing in front of the home fans. They are sophomore Brian Carthas, junior Tommy Colclough, senior Chris Owen and sophomore Seamus Young.
80% Owen... Last season Princeton scored five goals against Harvard, and four of those came off the stick of senior Chris Owen, including both goals in Princeton's 2-1 win.
Family Ties... Princeton has family ties with both Harvard and Brown. Chris Owen's father and uncle both played for the Crimson, while Brian Carthas' cousin Mike skates for Brown.
Looking Ahead... Princeton begins a three-game homestand next weekend when Dartmouth and Vermont visit Baker Rink on Friday and Saturday. Then the following Tuesday, Princeton hosts its travel-partner, Yale.
Strength of Schedule... The 2003-04 Princeton hockey schedule is one of the toughest in the nation. The Tigers currently have 10 opponents on their schedule that are either nationally ranked or receiving votes in the national polls, five of whom played in the NCAA tournament a year ago.
OT Struggles... Friday night's overtime loss to Colgate brought Princeton's string of overtime games without a win to nine. The Tigers last overtime win was a 2-1 triumph against Yale on Nov. 20, 2001. Princeton is 0-3-5 in that stretch.
Lead Time... When Princeton scored early in the second period on Friday night, it gave the Tigers' their first lead of the 2003-04 season, and snapped a string of 237:22, almost four games, since Princeton's last lead during the 2002-03 season. Scoring Race... Princeton's offense this season has come from unlikely sources. Princeton's two leading scorers, sophomore Brian Carthas and junior Jesse Masear had a combined eight points in 80 games prior to this season.
First Point.. Freshman Max Cousins became the first member of Princeton's Class of 2007 to earn a point in his freshman season. Cousins made a diving play to keep a puck alive in the offensive zone that led to a Brian Carthas goal against Colgate.
Senior Contribution... Seniors Matt Maglione and Sharam Fouladgar-Mercer earned their first points of the season, both assists, on Friday against Colgate.
Put the Puck in the Net... The Princeton offense against St. Cloud State came from sophomore Patrick Neundorfer and junior Neil Stevenson-Moore. Neundorfer scored an unassisted Tiger tally on Friday while Stevenson-Moore posted his 14th career goal on Saturday from Brian Carthas and Jesse Masear.
Lots of Saves... Princeton sophomore goaltender Eric Leroux has seen a lot of shots this year and has stopped most of them. After back-to-back 40+ save nights at St. Cloud, he stopped 31 in Friday's overtime loss to Colgate. Last season he finished strong including two stellar playoff performances.
These Guys Can Play... Six Tigers made their collegiate debut at St. Cloud State. They were freshmen Ian McNally, Darroll Powe, Daryl Marcoux, Max Cousins, Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and Kevin Westgarth. B.J. Mackasey made his debut against Colgate last weekend.
