Minneapolis, Minn. - The Princeton men's hockey team fell to No. 13 Miami 5-3 in the consolation game of the Dodge Holiday Classic at the Minnesota's Mariucci Arena. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller led the way for Princeton as he tallied two assists in the game.
The first period was a back-and-forth period that saw both teams have solid scoring chances. Miami came out hard and outshot the Tigers 6-1 in the first seven minutes. However Princeton answered back and evened up the shots by the midway point of the period. At the 13:00 mark, Miami had its best chance of the period, but Princeton goaltender Eric Leroux was able to stop Miami's Mike Kompon's backhander from the doorstep. Just over a minute later though, the Tigers were not as fortunate as a shot by Matt Christie bounced off two posts before ending up in the Tiger net. Christie's shot along the ice hit the near post, then slid along the goal line and hit the inside of the far post and bounced into the goal. Assists on the goal were credited to Derek Edwardson and Marty Guerin. Miami's goal came on its 11th shot of the game and the Redhawks held a 12-7 shot advantage after one period of play.
Miami controlled the bulk of second period play but Princeton was able to take advantage of its opportunities to keep pace with the Redhawks, despite being outshot 20-4 in the period. The Tigers scored first in the period to know the game at 1-1. With Miami's Joe Pomaranski serving a slashing penalty, the Tiger power play came alive and sophomore Seamus Young scored on a wrister from the point that changed directions before it reached Miami goaltender Brandon Crawford-West. Freshman Grant Goeckner-Zoeller assisted on Young's third goal of the season at 3:14 of the period.
Miami however answered right back and reclaimed the one-goal lead 27 seconds later when Matt Davis scored on a rocket from the point, assisted by Kompon. Miami continued to dictate play throughout the period and went ahead 3-1 at the 17:43 mark, two seconds after the Tigers had killed off a penalty. Miami's third goal was scored by Todd Grant as he redirected a pass from Guerin past Leroux. Princeton reacted strongly after the goal and put together a strong final two shifts in the period to move back within a goal.
At the 19:00 mark, Princeton had its best scoring chance of the game as sophomore Sebastian Borza drove to the net and left the puck for freshman Darroll Powe, who just missed wide with the shot. Play went up and down the ice and with 28 seconds to go the Tigers scored their second goal in the period on just four shots to make the score 3-2. Sophomore Brian Carthas carried the puck in the neutral zone and fed senior Steve Slaton. Slaton brought it into the Miami zone where he fed sophomore Mark Masters in the center of the ice. Masters wasted little time and fired a quick snap shot along the ice that beat Crawford-West along the ice on his glove side for his second goal of the season.
The Tigers had a few chances to draw even early in the third, but Crawford-West ate up all the opportunities and the Redhawks added two late goals coming from Edwardson and Grant. Princeton added a late goal to move the score to 5-3. The goal came on the power play and developed as Goeckner-Zoeller skated around the Miami zone where he fed freshman Darroll Powe. Powe received the pass in the slot, stopped it, and then backhanded it through Crawford-West.
Leroux fell to 5-11-0 on the season despite his third 40-save performance of the year.
The Tigers complete their non-conference schedule on Jan. 2 and 3 when they host Merrimack College of Hockey East for a pair of games at Baker Rink.
