Princeton Swimming Breaks Into Top 25

Princeton, N.J. - The Princeton University men's and women's swimming and diving teams each earned spots in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association Top 25 Poll. The poll, released today, has the Tiger men ranked No. 23 and the women ranked No. 25.
The Princeton men move into the Top 25 with 24 points and a perfect 8-0 record. The Tigers' season has been a strong one with their first four meets at home. Princeton defeated Cornell, Pennsylvania, Army and earned a first-place finish in its own Princeton Invitational to start the year. After a 76-point win at Dartmouth, the Tigers headed to Cambridge for the H-Y-P meet. The Tigers kept their undefeated season in tact with a dramatic win over Harvard. Jamie Leahy, Mike Salerno, Justin Chiles and Carl Hessler tapped in at 2:59.61, just ahead of a Crimson foursome to give Princeton a 179-174 win. Princeton closes out its regular season this Friday, Feb. 14 with Columbia at home.
The women's team finished the regular season undefeated once again. The Tigers have been unbeaten for five consecutive regular seasons. The Tigers used a true team effort in disposing the competition with relative east this season. The year began at Boston College with a 185-133 win over the Eagles. Princeton returned home where it defeated Cornell, Pennsylvania, Brown and Northeastern in dual-meet competition. The Tigers also hosted the Princeton Invitational and won easily against programs such as Rutgers and St. John's. Back-to-back road meets, including the H-Y-P meet at Harvard, resulted in three dual-meet victories and a win over Columbia in the season finale gave coach Teeter's team its 41st straight dual-meet victory. The Tigers are 9-0 and set to defend their three straight Ivy meet titles when they host the 2003 Ivy League Championships from Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
The CSCAA Poll has Stanford holding the top spot on the men's side. Auburn, although receiving two number one votes slips into the second spot after sharing it with Stanford in the last poll. The Auburn women are No. 1 with all eight first-place votes.
The Division I Women's Championships will be held at Auburn University March 20-22 and the Men's Division I Champinoships will be held at the University of Texas Jamail Swim Center March 27-29. The final coaches poll will be announced on Feb. 28 when a national dual meet champion will be crowned by the CSCAA.
