Princeton, N.J. - Chris Sailer will be inducted in to the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame this Saturday, Feb. 8 in a ceremony sponsored by the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association. Sailer, who has more wins than her two predecessors combined, has put Princeton women's lacrosse on the map with remarkable success in 16 years at the helm.
Over those 16 years, Sailer has managed to compile an impressive win-loss record of 199-68 and has amassed nine Final Four appearances, six Ivy League titles and two national championships. Under her guidance, Princeton won 19 straight games to end last season with her second national title.
The Tigers won their first-ever national title with the 1994 NCAA championship and have had numerous NCAA successes including national runner-up finishes in 1993, 1995 and 2000, semifinal appearances in 1989, 1992, 1996, and 2001, and quarterfinal appearances in 1998 and 1999. "I've had a great time coaching great players at Princeton," says Sailer. "My success is a reflection of the good fortune I've experienced here."
Sailer's teams have been ranked among the Top 10 nationally each of the last 14 years, including appearances at No.1 in 1989, 1992, 1994, 1995 and finished No. 1 in 2002. She has also coached 32 of Princeton's 34 All-Americas and, in 1998, became the first women's lacrosse coach in Ivy history to have the League's Player of the Year (Crista Samaras) and Rookie of the Year (Julie Shaner) in the same season.
In 1993,1994 and again in 2000, Sailer was honored by her peers as the Division I Coach of the Year, she was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year six times (1992, 1993, 1994, 2000, 2001 and 2002) and is also a member of the NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Committee.
Sailer served as president of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association from 1996-99 and is a 1996 inductee into the New England Lacrosse Hall of Fame. She was similarly honored by the Harvard Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Haverford (Pa.) High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.
"To be inducted into the Pennsylvania Lacrosse Hall of Fame is really a big honor for me," says Sailer. "This is my home state, it's where I grew up. I also feel a connection with the other inductees which makes it that much more special."
The 2003 Class includes Gail Allebach, a long-time women's lacrosse official, Ann Sage, a former coach at Pennsylvania and Julie Williams, a former coach at Penn State. On the men's side, Christopher Dent (Penn State), Theodore Haynie (Germantown Academy), Sid Jamieson (Bucknell) and the late Peter Ortale (Duke), victim of the September 11 World Trade Center attack, all enter with coaching and playing accolades.
