Princeton, N.J. - When Princeton meets Virginia in Charlottesville this Sunday it will be the 16th time the programs have met in a series best described as close. The Tigers hold a 9-7 advantage, have won the last four meetings by a total of seven goals and have played six overtime periods with the Cavaliers.
Princeton enters Sunday's game with a 1-1 record after Loyola snapped its 20-game win streak in double-overtime last weekend. Princeton rallied from a two-goal deficit with just over a minute left in regulation, but fell 9-8 in sudden death. The loss dropped the Tigers to No. 2 in the national polls and moved Loyola to the top spot in the rankings.
Virginia, meanwhile, remained steady at No. 8 in the polls but fell to Maryland on Tuesday night and currently owns a 3-2 overall record. The last time Princeton played at Virginia, it was after a tough home loss to Loyola. The Tigers were 1-1 entering that game and won it 9-6.
Both Princeton and Virginia hold the home-field edge in the series with the Tigers boasting a 5-2 record against the Cavaliers in 1952 Stadium and Virginia holding a 4-3 edge on the Orange and Black at Charlottesville. A Princeton win would even Princeton's record at Virginia and Princeton's all-time record versus the ACC, which now stands at 18-19. The Tigers bring a balanced attack into this year's meeting with three attackers tied for the team's lead in goals with four. Theresa Sherry, who also has an assist this season, leads the team in points with five. Rachael Becker, Princeton's defensive leader, is coming off a game in which she registered seven ground balls and six caused turnovers.
Sunday's game can be heard live on WBUD AM 1260 and can also be heard on Princeton's official athletic Web site, www.GoPrincetonTigers.com. Game time from Charlottesville is 1 p.m.
