March 27, 2003 | Women's Lacrosse
March 27, 2003
Princeton, N.J. - It may not have the same implications as last time, but then again the last time Princeton and Georgetown met in women's lacrosse action is was for the 2002 NCAA championship. The Tigers and Hoyas meet again this Friday night at Class of 1952 Stadium (6 p.m. CN8, CSTV, WBUD AM 1260, www.GoPrincetonTigers.com)
The women of Old Nassau enter as winners of two straight and sport a 3-3 overall record. In defense of their NCAA crown, Princeton has dropped games to No. 1 Loyola, No. 3 Duke, No. 5 Virginia and now turn to No. 4 Georgetown, which lost its first game of the season last Saturday (to Duke) and comes in with a 5-1 overall mark.
Princeton defeated Georgetown 12-7 in the national championship game a year ago, avenging its only loss of the 2002 campaign. The Hoyas won last season's opening contest in overtime and Princeton would not lose again. Georgetown's win was its first-ever at class of 1952 Stadium, where the Tigers now hold a 3-1 edge. The all-time series is tied at 4-4 and two of those games went into overtime. In fact, six of their eight previous meetings have been decided by two goals or less.
The Tigers enter this season's game averaging 9.81 goals per contest with junior Theresa Sherry leading the way. Sherry has scored nine goals in Princeton's last two games and leads the team in both goals (15) and points (16). Senior Rachael Becker heads the defensive unit with a team-high 26 ground balls and a team-high 24 caused turnovers.
Senior Wick Stanwick, who has 18 goals and five assists, leads Georgetown's offense. Sophomore Sarah Robinson has started all six games in goal for the Hoyas and has a 7.41 goals-against average for head coach Kim Simons, who co-captained Princeton's 1994 NCAA champion women's lacrosse team.
Friday's game will be broadcast live on WBUD AM 1260 and online at www.GoPrincetonTigers.com. The game can also be seen on the College Sports Television Network and on CN8 via tape-delay at 8 p.m.
