Princeton, N.J. - Saturday's women's lacrosse game between No. 7 Princeton and No. 6 Dartmouth will have major Ivy League championship implications with it. The Tigers come in at 4-1 in the conference, one game back of first-place Dartmouth. The Big Green enter at 6-0 and can clinch the outright title with a win. Princeton and Dartmouth draw at 1 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
The Tigers are 9-4 overall and have won eight of their last nine contests. Princeton is currently fourth in the nation in scoring defense and is led by senior tri-captain Rachael Becker, who is second in the NCAA in caused turnovers per game. Becker has 44 caused turnovers this season, only two back of her total last year.
Junior Theresa Sherry is Princeton's top offensive threat with 30 goals this season. Both Becker and Sherry are returning first-team All-Americas and both are 2003 Tewaaraton Trophy candidates. Dartmouth's attack has three players with over 20 goals this season. Lana Smith leads the team with 28, while Katianna Christian and Whitney Jamison follow with 23 and 21 goals respectively. The Big Green are averaging 11.36 goals per contest compared to Princeton's 10.82. The Tigers, however, have a higher shot-on-goal percentage (.770 to .690) and have over three more ground balls per game.
The two teams are 5-5 against each other at Hanover all-time. Princeton leads the series 14-12 and has won the last two meetings. Last season the Tigers rolled to a 15-3 win at Class of 1952 Stadium.
A Princeton win on Saturday would give them a share of the Ivy crown with the head-to-head edge against Dartmouth. Yale also has one Ivy loss and holds the head-to-head edge on Princeton. The Elis face Cornell (3-2 Ivy) on Saturday in New Haven.
Princeton, the defending Ivy League champion, closes out the Ivy schedule with Brown on Saturday, May 3.
