Princeton, N.J. - Missy Holmes was named head women's lacrosse coach at Towson University after three successful seasons as an assistant under Chris Sailer at Princeton. Holmes leaves the Tigers with two national championship rings and three Ivy titles under her belt.
"Princeton was just a great experience," says Holmes. "We have a fun coaching staff and great people all around. It really made my job a lot easier."
Holmes joined Princeton's staff in 2001 and helped the Tigers to a 14-5 overall record, an Ivy League title and a Final Four appearance. The next two seasons would bring ultimate success for Holmes and the Tigers with back-to-back NCAA championships.
The 2002 national title was Holmes' first as a coach after three championship titles as a player at Maryland. She closed out last year with the 2003 NCAA title, giving her five championship rings in only 10 season of college lacrosse. Holmes won back-to-back titles at both Princeton and Maryland, the only two programs to ever win consecutive women's lacrosse national championships. The Tigers also won the Ivy title in all three of her seasons marking the first Ivy three-pete in program history
A four-year performer on defense for the Terrapins, she helped Maryland win three NCAA championships from 1994 to 1997. Homes was a three-time selection to the Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll and graduated with a degree in neurobiology. She helped Maryland compile an NCAA record 50-game winning streak and a four-year record of 68-2.
Dr. Wayne Edwards, Director of Athletics at Towson, announced that Holmes will replace Linda Ohrin, who coached the Tigers for the past five season. Ohrin's contract was not renewed after Towson finished 7-9 overall and 1-6 in the CAA last year.
"The Towson position is a good job and I'm ready for it," says Holmes. "I'm excited to have my own program and I'll have it in a very good lacrosse area with good athletes already in place. I'm really looking forward to it."
