Rachael Becker, the 2003 Tewaaraton Trophy winner as the top women's lacrosse player in the nation, has been named a finalist for the Women's Sports Foundation's 2003 Sportswoman of the Year Award.
Becker is one of nine team sport finalists for the award; 10 women are finalists for the individual sport award, including figure skater Michelle Kwan, golfer Annika Sorenstam and tennis star Serena Williams. Voting is currently underway online at www.WomensSportsFoundation.org for winners in both the individual sport and team sport categories.
The award winners will then be honored at the Women's Sports Foundation's 24th Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner on Mon., Oct. 20, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.
Becker was perhaps the ultimate "team" player while at Princeton, leading the Tigers to consecutive national championships as the anchor of a stellar defensive unit. A first-team All-America selection three times, she also won the 2003 Honda Award for lacrosse and shared the coveted C. Otto von Kienbusch as Princeton's top senior female athlete. She was also named the 2003 Ivy League Player of the Year, tying for the national lead in caused turnovers per game and leading the Tigers to an Ivy championship. She finished her career as Princeton's all-time leader in both ground balls and interceptions.
A two-sport athlete and captain for both the field hockey and lacrosse teams, Becker started all 78 games of her lacrosse career, played on teams that reached the national semifinals five times (four lacrosse, one field hockey) and helped the Tigers to seven Ivy League titles.
Previous winners of the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year Award from the Women's Sports Foundation include such luminaries as soccer star Mia Hamm, basketball standout Lisa Leslie, Olympic medal-winning figure skater Sarah Hughes and tennis superstar Venus Williams.
