Men's Volleyball Opens 2004 Season With Strong Effort In 3-1 Loss

SAN DIEGO - The Princeton men's volleyball team opened its 2004 season with a 3-1 loss to UC-San Diego Monday night, a team that had played five matches already. The Tigers were competitive in their opener against a team coming off a 3-1 win over the No. 6 team (Stanford) in the country.
Princeton went toe-to-toe with San Diego in the opening game before falling 31-29. The Tigers had 18 kills to only six errors, but were still outhit by their experienced rivals. San Diego would jump all over Princeton in the second game, taking a 30-16 victory. The Tigers would battle back in the third game and, despite having its worst hitting performance of the match, found a way to claim a 30-28 win. San Diefgo wouldn't let it go any further, claiming the fourth game and the match with a 30-21 win.
Hamming led Princeton's efforts with 15 kills, including a late one in the third game to give the Tigers a comeback win. He made only five errors in 24 swings, giving him a team-best .417 attack percentage. Sean Vitousek added nine kills with one error, while Blake Robinson had 13 kills.
Senior setter Jason Liljestrom had 40 assists and 14 digs.
Princeton will face Cal-Baptist Tuesday night.
