Princeton, N.J. - St. Cloud's Billy Hengen had a goal and three assists as the Huskies defeated the Princeton men's hockey team 7-2 on Friday night in front of 1,038 fans at Baker Rink. Sophomores Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and Kevin Westgarth scored the Tiger goals.
St. Cloud (3-3-1; 0-2-0 WCHA) opened up a 2-0 lead with a pair of power-play goals in the first period. Andrew Gordon opened the scoring at 13:37 and then Mike Doyle extended it to 2-0 at 17:16 when he redirected a pass from Dave Iannazzo past Princeton freshman Jeff Mansfield. Princeton moved within a goal in the first minute of the second period. Senior Luc Paquin intercepted a breakout pass at the blueline and promptly fired the puck on net. Goeckner-Zoeller picked it up and after a saved shot pushed his own rebound around the outstretched arm of goaltender Jason Montgomery.
The one-goal margin was short-lived however, as St. Cloud added a third power-play goal 1:04 later to make it 3-1. The goal was Gordon's second of the night. The Huskies scored again at 2:11, 3:12 and 4:07 to make the score 6-1. The goals came from Hengen, Nate Dey and Aaron Brocklehurst. In all, St. Cloud was four of 10 on the night in the power play as they pulled away early in the second period.
Westgarth got one of the goals back just 19 seconds after Brocklehurst's goal. Skating into the offensive zone, Westgarth pulled up and rifled a shot through Montgomery's legs. Freshmen Landis Stankievech and Erik Pridham assisted on the goal, the first collegiate point for both skaters. St. Cloud added a final goal at 13:09 of the second period when Nate Raduns one-timed a Hengen pass while shorthanded.
Montgomery made 16 saves on the night to improve to 2-1-0 on the season, while Mansfield fell to 0-1-0 after stopping 12 of 18 shots. Sophomore B.J. Sklapsky played 35:53 in relief and made 10 saves on 11 shots.
Princeton returns to action tomorrow night at 7 p.m., when the Tigers host Alabama-Huntsville, 5-2 winners over Yale tonight in New Haven, Conn.
