Princeton, N.J. - Junior captain Parick Neundorfer posted a hat trick as the Princeton men's hockey team played to a 5-5 tie with Alabama-Huntsville on Saturday night at Baker Rink. Neundorfer was one of four Tigers to tally two or more points in the game.
Princeton (0-1-1) opened the scoring just 2:22 into the game with its first of four power-play goals. Junior Seamus Young pushed the puck form the point to junior Dustin Sproat who put the puck on the net. The puck then caromed off the post and out to Neundorfer who one-timed it past Alabama-Huntsville goaltender Marc Narduzzi. Neundorfer made it 2-0 at 11:26 when he tallied his second power-play goal of the night. Sophomore Grant Goeckner-Zoeller and Young added assists on the goal. The Chargers (2-1-1) picked up their play following the 2-0 goal and stormed back to make the score 2-2 before the end of the first period. Craig Bushey scored on the power play at 13:21 and Chris Martini scored his first of two goals at 18:36 when he batted a puck out of the air and into the Tiger goal.
Princeton reassumed the lead early in the second on Neundorfer's third power-play goal of the night. In similar fashion to the first goal, he scored after another shot rang off the post, this time off the stick of Goeckner-Zoeller. Sproat also assisted on the goal.
Neundorfer's hat trick was the first for a Tiger since Brad Parsons tallied three goals on Feb. 12, 2000 in a 4-3 win at Rensselaer.
UAH captain Jared Ross made it 3-3 four minutes later on the power play before Princeton sophomore Daryl Marcoux ripped a shot from the point just after a Charger penalty expired. The goal came with assists from freshmen Erik Pridham and Landis Stankievech and was his first collegiate goal. Princeton went ahead by two goals early in the third when senior Jesse Masear scored on the power play from senior Neil Stevenson-Moore and junior Brian Carthas.
Princeton held a 5-3 lead but the Chargers stormed back, scoring twice in the final 7:30 to force the 5-5 tie. Martini made it 5-4 at 12:30 and Bruce Mulherin knotted it up with his diving redirection at 16:57.
In overtime, Alabama-Huntsville had the better scoring chances, but junior goaltender Eric Leroux made a save on Todd Bentley on a breakaway. UAH did find the back of the net in the overtime, but the goal was waved off after Grant Selinger redirected into the net with his skate.
Leroux made 38 saves to post the tie, while Scott Munroe made 19 saves in relief of Narduzzi to post the tie.
Princeton resumes play Friday night at Vermont for its first ECAC Hockey League game of the season.
