PRINCETON - A thrilling meet at Denunzio Pool ended on the wrong note for the Princeton women's swimming and diving team, as Rutgers pushed ahead in the 400 free relay to claim a 156.5-140.5.
Princeton fell into an early hole by losing the first two races, but freshman Brett Shiflett won the 200 free in 1:51.30 to get the Tigers into the winning column. Rutgers established control again with wins in the next three races, but sophomore Sobenna George got the rally started in the 50 free with a win in 24.37. Her mark tied Ruth Nichols' time, giving both swimmers a share of the first-place points. The win did ignite a run for Princeton, which claimed wins in the 100 free (Stephanie Hsiao, 51.58), the 200 breast (Lisa Hamming, 2:20.79) and the 3-meter dive (Michelle Demond, 248.77). Those three wins gave Princeton the opportunity to finish with a dramatic rally in the final two events.
The 200 IM was the last individual race of the day, and Hamming's time of 2:04.82 topped that of teammate Kelly Hannigan (2:06.30) and Hsiao (2:06.80). The 1-2-3 finish gave Princeton the opportunity to win the meet with a first- and third-place finish in the 400 free relay. Unfortunately for the home team, it was Rutgers finishing in those two spots to clinch the win.
